The Migration and Borders Group is responsible for guiding the UK’s immigration, borders, asylum, and citizenship system to ensure it is run in a coherent, end-to-end manner, providing excellent customer service and applying fair but firm controls, in line with Ministerial objectives. The group collaborates with the Border Security Command and Capabilities within the Home Office, notably Border Force, Immigration Enforcement, and the Customer Services Group, which deliver front-line services, along with other key Government and external partners.

The Director of Border Policy is a senior role leading policy development and providing systems leadership on cross-cutting border issues. The Director will work closely with operational partners and across Government.

The Director will lead teams on high-profile issues such as border security, visa policy, goods and customs, the EU entry and exit scheme, and the system crisis hub.

This role also involves leadership within the Migration and Borders Group and membership on Border Force’s senior management board.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Leading the Home Office’s strategic vision and policies for securing the border.
  2. Collaborating with partners in Border Security, Border Force, HMRC, and other external agencies to deliver government priorities for border security.
  3. Leading the cross-Government programme for the introduction of the EU Entry/Exit System.
  4. Overseeing customs and goods policy for the department.
  5. Driving transformation initiatives at the border, including policy development and delivery for ETAs and eVisas, and reviewing the Border Force operating mandate.
  6. Reviewing key visa policies.
  7. Leading the migration and border system’s crisis response capabilities.
  8. Participating in the Migration and Borders leadership team and serving on the Border Force senior board.
