Home Office Digital, Data and Technology designs, builds and develops services for the rest of the department and for government. Every year our systems support up to 3 million visa applications, checks on 100 million border crossings, up to 8 million passport applications and deliver 140 million police checks on people, vehicles and property.

Join the Digital Development Programme as an Associate Software Engineer

Are you passionate about technology, driven by curiosity, and eager to learn? Do you excel at problem-solving, adapt easily to change, and enjoy building strong stakeholder relations? Then our scheme could be the perfect next step in your career, as Home Office Digital, Data and Technology is seeking to strengthen its early talent pipeline.

We will be facilitating an online open event for an overview of the programme where you will be able to ask any questions on Tuesday 9th September at 6:30pm.

As an Associate Engineer you will be paired with an engineering colleague to learn on the job whilst designing, running and improving software components.

Learn to write clean, secure code that meets our technical standards.

Work under close supervision with regular feedback to support your development.

This post is being offered on a Fixed Term Appointment (FTA) basis in order to complete a finite piece of work for 18 months.

What You’ll Gain

You will receive structured support through mentoring, and hands-on experience.

Tools and technologies we use

At the Home office we use a variety of technologies, and this may vary depending on team you are working in:

  • Backend – Java, Node.js, C#, PHP, Scala, Power Platform.
  • Frontend – React, Javascript, Typescript, Angular, Next.js.
  • Data – Postgress, Microsoft SQWL Server, MongoDB, Apache Kafka, Neo4J, Amazon Athena.
  • Platform – AWS, Azure, Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, Ansible, Terraform, Dynatrace.

Key responsibilities

  • Taking tasks from definition to completion and owning changes.
  • Completing basic development/test tasks on your own initiative, and more advanced tasks under the supervision of others.
  • Proposing solutions that fit within the overall models and patterns set by more senior developers.
  • Identifying and resolving issues with one of our systems, using established methods.
  • Supporting the definition and delivery of new services.
  • Learning more advanced software development and delivery skills to advance as an engineer.

Over the course of the programme, you will work in multidisciplinary delivery teams, to deliver word-class, user-centred services for the public and civil servants.

Working Pattern

This fixed term appointment is available on a full-time and part-time basis, with a minimum of 30 hours per week due to business requirements.

Travel

Travel can be expected on an Ad Hoc basis dependent on business needs. Candidates could be required to travel between other hubs for meetings or to assist on projects if required. This could involve overnight stays and if so, enough notice will be given.

Travel costs incurred for business need will be reimbursed in line with Home Office travel policy.
