Chartered Surveyor - National Taxation – Role Overview

This role is within the National Taxation team of the VOA’s District Valuation Services (DVS).

The team provides valuations and advice for National Taxation purposes on behalf of HMRC, Community Infrastructure Levy, Right to Buy, and DWP Benefits.

DVS performs statutory and non-statutory functions, including:

  • Providing advice on valuations and apportionments for national taxation.
  • Offering property advice for Other Public Bodies to support regulatory and legislative functions.
  • Implementing government policies and estate strategies involving property and public funds.

This technical surveying and leadership role offers the chance to handle high-profile, complex casework across various property types. The role involves working within a fast-paced team to meet client needs, providing leadership, guidance, and valuation advice regionally and nationally.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and support to the national tax team regionally and nationally.
  • Assist the DVS management team, working with Team Leaders and Sector Head to develop a diverse, skilled workforce aligned with quality and budget goals.
  • Undertake complex valuation casework for HMRC and DWP, supporting benefits administration, Right to Buy, and Community Infrastructure Levy.
  • Support the management of NT’s Initial Appraisal Unit and HMRC’s initial appraisals.
  • Assist with trade-related valuations and development appraisals in London.
  • Collaborate with specialists on technical and policy issues.
  • Review high-profile or complex valuations, identify risks, and ensure quality and timeliness.
  • Provide technical guidance, training, and mentoring to caseworkers nationally and regionally.
  • Stay informed on political, economic, social, technical, environmental, and legislative factors affecting DVS and National Taxation.
  • Report to stakeholders, including Ministerial levels when needed.
  • Manage risks in casework to support timeliness and tax revenue collection.
  • Enhance customer satisfaction and taxpayer experience.
  • Act as an expert witness, including appearances before tribunals and submission of evidence.
  • Promote skills sharing, best practices, and innovation within the team.
