Chartered Surveyor – National Taxation – Role Overview
This role is within the National Taxation team of the VOA’s District Valuation Services (DVS).
The team provides valuations and advice for National Taxation purposes on behalf of HMRC, Community Infrastructure Levy, Right to Buy, and DWP Benefits.
DVS handles various statutory and non-statutory functions, including:
- Providing advice on valuations and apportionments for national taxation.
- Offering property advice for Other Public Bodies to support regulatory and legislative functions.
- Delivering government policies and estate strategies involving property requirements for public functions or public funding.
This technical surveying and leadership role offers the chance to lead high-profile and complex casework across all property types. The role involves working within a fast-paced team, providing leadership, guidance, and valuation advice regionally and nationally.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing technical leadership and support to the national tax team, mainly regionally but also nationally.
- Collaborating with the DVS management team to ensure a diverse workforce capable of transferring skills and meeting quality and budget targets.
- Undertaking complex valuation casework, including HMRC and DWP valuations for benefits, Right to Buy, and Community Infrastructure Levy.
- Supporting the management of NT’s Initial Appraisal Unit and HMRC’s initial appraisals.
- Providing support for Trade-related valuations and Development Appraisals in London.
- Engaging with specialists on technical and policy issues.
- Reviewing high-profile or complex valuations, identifying risks, and ensuring quality and timeliness.
- Offering technical guidance, training, and mentoring to caseworkers nationally and regionally.
- Maintaining awareness of external agendas affecting DVS and the sector.
- Reporting to stakeholders, including Ministerial level, when necessary.
- Managing risks in casework to support timely tax collection.
- Enhancing customer satisfaction and taxpayer experience.
- Acting as an expert witness or providing evidence in tribunals when required.
- Sharing skills, promoting best practices, and encouraging innovation within the team.
