We are hiring for both contracted and casual roles, with hours ranging from zero hours up to a 4‑day a week, 23.5 hour role. All roles involve weekend and Bank Holiday working. For contracted staff, there will be the opportunity to pick up occasional extra shifts as overtime.
Key Responsibilities
- Give all visitors a warm welcome and help them get the most out of their visit by providing information and support.
- Encourage visitors to engage with and learn about the museum through delivering tours and facilitating their experience of our handling collection.
- Communicate with colleagues to ensure the smooth daily operation of public spaces.
- Encourage visitor feedback and support the wider improvement of visitor satisfaction.
- Maintain a safe and secure environment
- Invigilate and patrol gallery spaces and collection displays, managing the flow of visitors between gallery spaces.
- Report and report accidents, safeguarding and security incidents as they arise.
- Assist in the evacuation of all public spaces during emergencies.
- Support fundraising and commercial activities
- Proactively ask visitors to make donations to support the Museum.
- Operate the till and ticketing system; sell event tickets.
- Encourage visitor engagement with our shop, events and venue hire spaces.
- Support the running of commercial events and private hires.
- Occasionally provide retail cover.

Qualifications and Requirements
- Ability to provide excellent service to all visitors/audiences in a busy environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, actively listening.
- Ability to use initiative to respond to unexpected challenges.
- Enterprising, with a willingness to make a proactive contribution to Museum fundraising & sales targets.
- Ability to work well independently and with others.
- A passion for making our stories and collections accessible to all.
Desirable
- Confident conversationally and as a public speaker, delivering information in an engaging manner.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Ability to operate a till and ticketing system.
- Interest in the subject of Home.
- Administrative and IT skills (Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel).
Other Requirements
- DBS criminal record check at the appropriate level required before start.
- Willingness to work weekend, bank holidays and occasional evening work.
