Role Overview
Lead the 'Stepping into History' community archaeology programme in the Lake District National Park, engaging local communities and managing volunteers and project activities as part of the Landscape Enhancement Initiative.
Key Responsibilities
- Actively engage communities to understand their needs and collaborate with staff to plan community archaeology projects.
- Negotiate, organise and manage the delivery of environmental, recreation, cultural heritage, archaeological and transport management initiatives that realise multiple public benefits.
- Provide advice, guidance and support to landowners and land managers to achieve enhanced and sustainable environmental management.
- Supervise, coordinate, and practically implement project activities with volunteers, contractors, apprentices and staff to achieve objectives and support partners.
- Engage in field activities such as archival research, dry‑stone wall condition surveys, walkover surveys, geophysics, level‑2 surveys, test‑pitting and excavation.
- Coordinate logistics, training and safety for volunteer teams and ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Prepare and submit project progress reports, budgets and impact evaluations to project sponsors and internal stakeholders.
- Facilitate communication between community participants, land owners, contractors and the organisation.
Qualifications & Skills
- Good degree in archaeology or a related subject, or equivalent relevant expertise.
- Experience developing and implementing community archaeology projects, with at least senior supervisor level competence in field archaeology.
- Strong team‑working, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Disciplined approach to work, good time‑management and ability to work under pressure to tight deadlines.
- Willingness to work weekend and occasional evenings.
- Knowledge of environmental and heritage management regulations is an asset.
- Location & Working Arrangement
Hybrid working model with days at the office base at Wayfaring House, Kendal and remote work supported by a company laptop provided to access the secure IT network.
