The Jersey Mental Health and Capacity Review Tribunal offers a rare and rewarding opportunity for medically qualified professionals to serve as Medical Members, making a real and lasting difference to people's lives.
In this role, your psychiatric expertise will be central to the Tribunal's consideration of applications and referrals made under the Mental Health (Jersey) Law 2016 and the Capacity and Self-Determination (Jersey) Law 2016. You will contribute to the determination of applications for discharge from detention, challenges to decisions relating to leave from hospital and restrictions on communications, and reviews of decisions concerning transfer for treatment outside Jersey. In addition, you will assist the Tribunal in reviewing applications under Part 5 of the Capacity and Self-Determination (Jersey) Law 2016, concerning capacity and significant restrictions on an individual's liberty.
Your clinical insight will support fair, lawful, and rigorous decision-making, ensuring that statutory criteria are properly applied and that individuals' rights are safeguarded. The panel comprises a legally qualified Chair, a medical member and lay members.

Our Medical Members usually take part in around twenty-five hearings each year where remote working arrangements are possible.
Hearings are remunerated at a half-day rate of £400 for 3.5 hours, while the pre-hearing examinations where required typically lasting around one hour is paid at £201, with reasonable expenses also reimbursed. Together, these elements create a role that offers both meaningful contribution and professional enrichment.
Applicants must be fully registered with the General Medical Council, and meet one of the following requirements:
- be a member or fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
- be a member of the Royal College of General Practitioners on the National Performers List with substantial experience in the diagnosis or treatment of mental disorder and at least four months in a supervised psychiatric training post recognised by the Royal College of Psychiatrists; or
- have a minimum of three years' full-time experience in a psychiatric training post or non-consultant career grade post with substantial experience in the diagnosis or treatment of mental disorder.
