Trainee Prison Officer (Operations)
Help us make Jersey a safer Island.
Working in the Prison Service, as well as assisting with smooth daily operations, you will be in the privileged position to support prisoners and contribute to a safer Island by reducing reoffending.
Prison Officers help prisoners take small steps that ultimately have a huge impact on rehabilitation such as supporting education, substance recovery programmes and maintaining links with family members. Supporting pathways to reintegration and ensuring that reoffending rates are lowered is the key priority for the service and our Prison Officers are the central facilitator in the journey.
This varied and fast paced role can lead to career progression opportunities.
Security and understanding
Our Prison Officers make a difference on a daily basis; from ensuring the security of the prison and all individuals to learning about the paths to successful rehabilitation to assist reintegration and minimise reoffending rates. Starting in an operational role, you will be given the support and development to progress where you will make a difference to people’s lives.
What your day looks like
Your day may be night and your week may be over weekends; shift work can provide a different type of freedom but is the first real difference for many that join the team. The operational role involves the security function of the prison which covers the gate, the control room and patrols. Coordinating both professional and personal prisoner visits, the scope of your communication will be wide from probation to family care and arranging these critical visits efficiently you will make a tangible difference to Prisoners. Performing external prisoner escort duties, you will be part of significant events in Prisoners’ lives which will include court hearings, medical appointments and transfers.
Your interests and strengths
Our Prison Service is focused on rehabilitation, but the nature of the environment means that situations are often emotionally charged and the ability to be resilient to aggressive behavior is essential. Ensuring that fairness, equality and respect runs through all you do will be fundamental and our Prison Officers take pride in achieving this. You will enjoy the pressure of the need to assimilate information quickly and respond at pace and will have an underpinning interest in the paths into and out of crime.
Help us toprovide an evidence based rehabilitation environment to ensure prisoners can lead useful lives both in custody and upon release.
Reasonable adjustments
If you have a disability, long‑term health condition, or are neurodivergent and require adjustments during the recruitment process, please let the hiring manager know
