The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government, working with all the main Whitehall departments. From energy to security, from roads to rivers, health to human rights, our work touches on most aspects of public life. From developing and drafting legislation to helping to secure economic and trade relationships, providing legal advice on policies to ensuring value from contracts, our work is stimulating and varied.
As Legal Project Manager, you’ll be joining the Legal Delivery Division, which sits within the Legal Operations Directorate. Our work is key to the future effectiveness of GLD’s work. We offer support to lawyers through areas such as legal process improvement, effective technology use and data-driven insights. We also provide complimentary service skills, such as Legal Project Managers. In all our work, we’re committed to excellence and innovation, helping GLD to achieve its vision of being an outstanding, future‑ready legal organisation.
Your role as Legal Project Manager will involve:
- Responsible for the successful delivery of legal projects across GLD.
- Driving efficiency and enhancing service delivery through data-driven and technology-enabled methods.
- Leading legal projects, reviewing existing processes to uncover areas of inefficiency.
- Developing new tools, processes and playbooks to create improvements that are built to last.
- Leading change management: designing and implementing strategic initiatives and projects to achieve process optimisation across the GLD Directorates.
- Providing operational support in terms of planning, scoping, financials, operational risks, reporting and coordinating teams.
- Enabling lawyers to focus on legal work.
- Coordinating teams to effectively deliver on day-to-day project execution.
About you:
- Experienced in end-to-end legal project delivery.
- Created clear project plans, trackers and status reports.
- Managed scope, risks, timelines and project deliverables.
- Experience applying appropriate project methodologies (e.g. Agile, Lean, hybrid) in a legal context.
- Strong understanding and interest in the legal context.
- Ability to introduce new legal technologies and lead the change management that goes with them.
- Experience of allocating and managing legal resources to deliver outcomes cost-effectively.
- Comfortable with data management, reporting and managing project budgets.
- Ability to build credibility with senior legal stakeholders and influence delivery decisions in a complex, cross-functional environment.
- Desirable to have relevant project management qualifications, such as Prince2, MSP or Agile accreditation.
- Proficient in MS Office and M365, familiarity with MS Project, Visio and Power BI.
- Experienced in applying lean/continuous improvement methodologies.
