Much more than law
The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government, working with all the main Whitehall departments. From energy to security, from roads to rivers, health to human rights, our work touches on most aspects of public life. From developing and drafting legislation to helping to secure economic and trade relationships, providing legal advice on polices to ensuring value from contracts, our work is stimulating and varied.
The Legal Delivery Division sits within the Legal Operations Directorate of the COO Group within GLD. Its core purpose is to secure the future effectiveness of GLD’s legal work. We are building support in many areas, such as: legal process improvement; automation; effective use of legal technology; data driven insights; and the provision of complimentary service skills, such as Legal Project Managers. We regularly collaborate with other Legal Operation services – the AI Programme, the Legal Knowledge and Learning Division, and the Digital and Data team. We seek to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of GLD's legal services so that our lawyers can focus on providing exceptional legal advice.
Your role
You will play a key leadership role in transforming how GLD delivers legal services. This is a strategic priority for us. Working closely with the Head of Legal Delivery, you will shape a growing function that’s built to improve consistency, efficiency, and effectiveness.
You will play a key role in designing and embedding GLD’s Legal Process Service offering. This includes legal project management, ensuring that complex legal work is delivered in a structured, predictable and transparent way. This will involve developing a specialist team and establishing relationships with senior leaders. Alongside this, you’ll improve processes by identifying opportunities to streamline how legal services are delivered and driving practical improvements. You’ll also lead legal delivery management: strengthening how we plan, resource, and manage delivery across teams.
This is your opportunity to shape emerging capability at an organisational level and define its long-term direction You will act as an ambassador for the Division, clearly articulating its importance.
About you
To be suited to the role, you’ll bring an in-depth understanding of legal project management, process improvement, legal processes and workflows.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills are vital. You can convey complex information in an accessible way. Building relationships and influencing stakeholders comes easily to you – including at a senior level.
Plus, you are a proactive problem-solver and can be counted on to independently identify and implement solutions or new ways of working.
Your skillset will be matched with substantial experience in delivering change in a legal organisation or a legal function (for example, Legal Operations experience either at a law firm or in-house). Previous experience as a practising lawyer would also be desirable.
Benefits
GLD encourages its people to develop their skills in a nurturing environment. Other benefits include access to a valuable civil service pension and flexible working arrangements.
Our vision is to be an outstanding legal organisation and a brilliant place to work where everyone can thrive and fulfil their potential.
