The Government Legal Department (GLD) is the largest provider of legal services across government, working with all the main Whitehall departments. From energy to security, from roads to rivers, health to human rights, our work touches on most aspects of public life. From developing and drafting legislation to helping to secure economic and trade relationships, providing legal advice on policies to ensuring value from contracts, our work is stimulating and varied.

Data is at the heart of everything government does. In particular, government handling of citizens' data can be high-profile and attract media attention. It can also provide the foundation for better and more efficient public services. As a result, this is your opportunity to be a part of varied, cross-cutting work. You'll join a team of qualified lawyers that advise on policy and operational aspects of data law and related matters, such as processing, protection and privacy. Your advice will be vital for Data Protection Officers, government digital specialists and policy officials in client departments. It will help them to accurately identify, assess and mitigate risk and find practical solutions. As such, you'll develop excellent client relationships, a deep expertise in this developing area of the law and grow professionally in a fast-paced environment. As well as data law, you'll develop public and administrative law skills, which are key to working in government.

We're looking for an experienced lawyer in UK information/data law. You possess reliable legal judgment and appreciation of legal risk. As a creative and strategic thinker, you're able to see legal issues in their context and advise accordingly. Plus, you can conduct sound analysis and use secure legal research to produce timely, fit-for-purpose advice. As a lawyer, client care really matters to you. You're a strong communicator, both orally and in writing. This carries across even in a fast-paced environment, where you manage your own practice and workload, meeting emergencies to hard deadlines. Not only do you understand the role of lawyers in government, but you're also motivated to develop your own expertise in this area.

GLD encourages its people to develop their skills in a nurturing environment. Other benefits include access to a valuable civil service pension and flexible working arrangements. Our vision is to be an outstanding legal organisation and a brilliant place to work where everyone can thrive and fulfil their potential. This is an exciting time for GLD, with cutting edge legal work on global issues and a transformation agenda which is ensuring the Department exemplifies the Modern Civil Service.
