Maintenance Firefighter

Under general supervision, with Firefighter Rank, provides support to the volunteer Fire Departments with maintenance issues involving apparatus and small equipment. Work involves implementing needed repairs for apparatus and equipment, maintaining records on all fire apparatus and equipment utilizing software programs; and responding to emergencies as needed or requested. Ensures, under the direction of the Apparatus Equipment Officer, all specialized rescue equipment is operational, properly located and ready for service when needed. Reports to the Chief of Operations Maintenance and Logistics Officer (Apparatus/Equipment Officer).

Assists with maintenance of all records on fire apparatus and equipment using software database to include inventory, maintenance dates, repairs needed, and inspection dates.

Performs a monthly checklist on all Lancaster County fire apparatus and equipment; notes any problems or damages to apparatus or equipment. Correlates all equipment checks performed weekly by 10 county career firefighters, addressing needed repairs or confirming repairs have been made effectively and accurately. Ensures all specialized rescue equipment is ready for deployment and service.

Performs preventative maintenance on all apparatus and equipment; picks up or delivers equipment as needed.

Uses various computer software programs to track, record, and monitor various maintenance issues.

Assists with the responsibility for the maintenance and upkeep of backup generators at various sites throughout the County and radio equipment and building sites for the emergency radio towers at various sites throughout the County.

Performs monthly calibration of various air-sampling equipment owned by Lancaster County Fire Service.

Assists in a variety of Fire Service and Emergency Management operations; performs special projects and assignments as requested by the Director.

Responds to all structure fires and hazardous materials incidents throughout the County during daytime hours as advised by chain of command; remains on-call after hours for any special assistance needed by the Fire Departments.

Assists with performing quarterly air test on the breathing air compressors owned by the Fire Service.

Attends and participates in training classes; remains updated on new trends and innovations in the field of equipment maintenance and repair.

Assists with the development of specifications and with the bidding process for equipment and apparatus acquisitions and replacement.

As directed, receives and/or reviews various records and reports such as breathing analysis reports, hydraulic oil analysis reports, certified inspection reports, security system reports, and bills form vendors.

Prepares and/or processes various records and reports such as monthly maintenance reports.

Refers to National Fire Protection Association guidelines, manufacturer schematics, equipment manuals, equipment and apparatus specifications, Internet, policy and procedure manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.

Operates a variety of vehicle, equipment, and machinery such as pickup truck, various fire apparatus, self-contained breathing apparatus, chainsaws, positive pressure fans, computer, router, switches, plotter, etc.

Uses a variety of tool such as mechanic hand tools, drills, air compressor, solder gun, voltage meter, etc.; a variety of supplies such as oil and lubricants, calibration gases, paper, water, general office supplies, etc.; and a variety of computer software such as Firehouse, Microsoft Office, Motorola Programming, Knox Box, etc.

Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Director, Fire Service personnel, vendors, other County employees, and the general public.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Attends and participates in staff meetings based on need and direction of his supervisor(s).

Assists with general office duties; greets and directs office visitors in the absence of the Administrative Assistant.

Attends and participates in STAR Team meetings, training, and response as a member of the Lancaster County Fire Service.

Participates in Fire Rescue, Emergency Management, and County sponsored drills and events.

Performs related duties as required.

Requires high school diploma or GED equivalent plus formal training, special courses or self-education training in fire service, supplemented by two years of experience in fire service; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must complete required course work and maintain required certifications. Maintains certain certifications specific to the mechanical nature of the job requirements.
