Wage: £21,216 a year

All training related travel expenses are paid by the employer.

Training course: Assistant accountant (level 3)

Hours: Monday - Friday, 9.00am - 5.00pm. 27 days annual leave per year, plus Bank Holidays. 37 hours 30 minutes a week.

Most of your apprenticeship is spent working. You will learn on the job by getting hands-on experience.

What you’ll do at work: You don’t have to work in a clinical job to help the NHS save lives. Healthcare organisations across the North West recruit apprentices annually onto the Skills Development Network's (SDN) Foundation Accounting Apprenticeship - a 24-month, Level 3 Assistant Accountant Apprenticeship. Apprentices are employed on a full-time, fixed-term contract attending day release training studying industry recognised AAT qualifications. The role may either be within one or may rotate through various functions of the Finance Department such as Management Accounting, Income & Costing, Accounts Payable/Receivable, Financial Services, Financial Accounting, and Cashiers.

What you’ll learn:

  • Assist with the investigation and response to financial information queries.
  • Record and analyse financial data using the organisation’s standard tools and processes.
  • Apply double entry bookkeeping and accounting standards to process financial documents, generate financial statements, and report financial information to users of accounts.
  • Assist with the production of accurate financial information for the preparation of accounts.
  • Reconcile financial data, such as preparation of reconciliations or review of reconciliations.
  • Investigate, resolve or escalate transactional queries and errors within their remit as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Communicate financial information in a way that non-finance stakeholders can interpret and understand.
  • Utilise digital skills to present key financial information using finance and accounting software and applications.
  • Use software packages to assist with basic accounting tasks in line with cyber and data security requirements, using data securely and safely, including backing up data.
  • Communicate using varying approaches and different media methods with an appreciation of the risks and benefits to the business of social media and other digital applications.

  • GCSE in English and Maths (grade 9-4 / A* - C)
  • Other in Accounting (grade Pass)
  • Bookkeeping (grade Pass)

After this apprenticeship: As this is a fixed-term apprenticeship, it does not include a guaranteed permanent post with an NHS organisation; however, whilst on programme, you’ll gain valuable experience and a recognised qualification that opens doors to a wide range of NHS careers. You’ll also have access to support and guidance to help you apply for permanent roles both during and after your apprenticeship. On completion, successful candidates could have the opportunity to continue to higher level apprenticeships studying the AAT Professional Diploma in Accounting (Level 4) and ultimately undertaking a professional accounting qualification.
