Overview

We are seeking a dedicated Grounds Operative to join our team at HMP Rochester, a Category C Male prison. You will work Monday–Friday as a supportive and driven team, contributing to a safe and nurturing environment in a self‑contained town that requires a large workforce to operate smoothly.

Responsibilities

  • You will work alongside experienced colleagues such as plumbers, electricians, carpenters, painters, cleaners, and administrators.
  • Your day‑to‑day tasks will include grounds maintenance, ensuring the safety of prisoners, staff, visitors, and the wider community, and following health and safety procedures.

Qualifications

  • Experience with grounds maintenance practices in areas of grass maintenance – Essential
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety requirements
  • Experience of taking instruction, following processes and procedures
  • Experience of supervision
  • NVQ Level 3 qualification in horticulture or an equivalent recognised horticultural industry qualification – Essential
  • Holding of PA2 and PA6 pesticides qualifications
  • Good Health & Safety knowledge
  • Excellent organisational, time‑management and people skills
