We are seeking a dedicated individual to join our Facilities Maintenance Team at HMP Whitemoor, a high-security male prison. The team works collectively to maintain a safe and secure environment for prisoners, staff, and visitors.
HMP Whitemoor operates like a self-contained city and relies on a large team to keep the facility functioning. The Facilities Maintenance Team contributes to smooth and safe operations that impact the wider prison community.

As a Commercial Gas Engineer, you will work with a team of trades professionals (Plumbers, Electricians, Carpenters, Painters, Cleaners, Administrators, and others) who are committed to making a positive difference by providing a safe and secure environment.

GFSL is a Ministry of Justice business delivering essential services to HMPPS. The role requires appropriate gas safety qualifications for domestic and commercial units as detailed below.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to maintain and service gas-related systems and safety equipment.
- Support gas safety operations in line with domestic and commercial requirements and relevant safety certificates.
- Engage in reactive maintenance, fault finding, installation, testing and commissioning where applicable.
- Adhere to Water Supply Regulations and Control of Legionella L8 requirements where relevant.
- Contribute to a safe, secure environment for prisoners and staff and support broader facility operations.
Qualifications
- CCN1 – Core domestic gas safety and relevant domestic appliance units
- COCN1 – Core commercial gas safety certificate and relevant commercial units
- Two years of experience in a role as a heating engineer, combustion engineer, or equivalent
- Plumber qualifications to C&G 6035 (Plumbing), C&G 6189 (Plumbing & Heating) and NVQ Level 3 in Plumbing or equivalent; or NVQ Level 2 with substantial relevant experience
- Familiarity with Water Supply Regulations and Legionella L8 requirements
- Experience in reactive maintenance, fault finding and resolution, installations, testing and commissioning
