Location: Gosport Ferry Maintenance Department, Clarence Wharf, Gosport

Reports to: Port Captain

Main Function:

To provide day to day engineering and electrical support to the maintenance team, whilst ensuring a hands-on approach to refit and overhaul maintenance work.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide day to day engineering and electrical support for the Port Captain who supervises the Company’s Marine Engineering Workshops.
  • Manage the repair and maintenance of the Company’s Fleet.
  • Ensure each vessel is dry-docked annually between September – May for repair works such as engine overhauls, underwater inspections, maintenance of propeller units, painting of the hull and superstructure, surveying and servicing of safety equipment.
  • Comply with the Domestic Safety Management Code for day-to-day repair and planned maintenance of plant and equipment on board vessels.
  • Follow documented procedures for handling repairs as per the Company’s Safety Management System Manual.
  • Maintain a neat appearance and wear clean personal protective equipment provided by the company.

Main Duties:

  • Undertake any task required for the efficient running of the maintenance team.
  • Exercise due care and attention to work in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Work closely with the Port Captain and his team to ensure that repairs of all reported defects are cleared quickly.
  • Notify the Port Captain of any incident or technical defect that may delay a vessel sailing.
  • Operate machinery, mechanical plant and vehicles safely.
  • Keep work areas clean and tidy while maintaining a safe workplace.
  • Undertake workshop induction and training on plant and equipment operation.
  • Provide on-call support as part of the Duty Fitter roster.
  • Perform any other reasonable duties required for the safe running of the service.

Qualifications/ Education Required:

  • Preferred STCW Second Engineer less than 3,000kW III/3 or minimum STCW Engineer Officer of the Watch III/3 (OOW) Certificate of Competency.
  • Candidates with alternative marine engineering qualifications will be considered dependent upon experience.
  • Full clean UK driving licence.

Experience Required:

  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the servicing and overhaul of marine engines, auxiliaries and propulsion units, along with knowledge of electrical installations.
  • Preferred knowledge of Cummins, Z-drives, Veth, Stamford.
  • A thorough knowledge of fault-finding techniques.
  • A broad level of tools would be preferred.
  • Arc and MIG welding and using oxyacetylene equipment would be an advantage, including minor fabrication work.
  • Update and maintain maintenance records as required.

  • Integrity and professionalism in general conduct and personal presentation.
  • Ability to manage time and be a good timekeeper.
