Overview

The Senior Technician – Weld & Frame Structure is responsible for creating the process and the specification for Welding and structural bonding for the iStream® superlight frame production.

Responsibilities

  • Support current and new model activities.
  • Create production process and facility strategies and support through Team Members in translating those into concrete action plans.
  • With support from the Senior Engineer – Welding & Frame Structure, liaise with other departments and suppliers to ensure process targets are met for production.
  • Deliver the tools required to enable the manufacturing process of our world-leading car models.
  • Evaluate process and coordinate activities with the team to improve Welded assembly quality.
  • Develop and standardise work instruction for each production process.
  • Ensure H&S requirements are met.
  • Carry out problem solving activities.
  • Support Cycle Time and line balancing, carry out trials and training activities for the new process.
  • Schedule own activities to provide manufacturing deliverables that meet required specifications within timescales and budgets.
  • Evaluate weld quality and dimensional accuracy of the Welded assembly.
  • Liaise with other members of the Manufacturing Engineering Team to support preparation of 2D concepts, layouts, designs for tooling and fixtures, plant installation, Weld assembly cells, etc.
  • Provide input to the Manufacturing Engineering Team to support feasible design solutions with regard to manufacturing, Weld assembly and ISO welding qualifications related to Aluminium structures welding.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Qualified in approved ISO welding qualifications (BS EN ISO 9606-2; BS EN ISO 15614-2) as specified for Aluminium.
  • Expert in Aluminium joining applications, primarily manual welding, with the ability to support automated welding and knowledge of Aluminium welding processes.
  • Knowledge of Aluminium welding standards and quality control processes; experience in tubular frame structure manufacture preferred.
  • Post weld quality check to meet ISO standards; dimensional verification to specification; metallurgical destructive testing.
  • Catia V5 (or alternative CAD) viewer experience preferred but not essential.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and specifications.
  • Ability to work autonomously and manage own workload; capable of planning and scheduling activities to meet goals.
  • Clear and effective communication skills with internal and external clients.
  • Ability to train others and perform tasks unsupervised (Trainer level competency).
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and guidelines related to manufacturing.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Some computer literacy – basics in Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Must be a team player who can work closely with GMAE Engineering and GMA production team.
