At Gordon Murray Automotive, electrical systems are fundamental to how our vehicles respond and perform. From architecture through to integration, every decision influences vehicle behaviour and overall system integrity. We are seeking a Principal Engineer – Electrical Systems to lead the design and development of these critical systems across current and future programmes. Working at the forefront of innovation, this role will lead a team of systems engineers and drive a structured, model‑based approach to electrical systems development, ensuring performance, quality, and integration targets are consistently achieved.
This Is Your Chance To
- Provide technical and strategic leadership for the design and development of vehicle electrical systems across multiple programmes.
- Lead and develop a team of systems engineers, driving best practice in model-based systems engineering (MBSE).
- Define and deliver system architectures, ensuring alignment with vehicle requirements including performance, cost, weight, and packaging.
- Own and govern systems engineering processes, methodologies, and toolsets to ensure a consistent and robust development approach.
- Develop and manage technical work packages and feature implementation plans in line with programme milestones.
- Oversee system development to meet environmental, EMC, functional safety, and legislative requirements.
- Take ownership of electrical system design artefacts released to Tier 1 suppliers and technical partners.
- Lead system reviews and support verification and validation activities, including FMEA, DVP, and ISO 26262 functional safety assessments.
- Drive technical input into supplier nomination and RFQ processes, ensuring clear and robust system requirements.
- Act as the electrical systems representative across the business, engaging with senior stakeholders and cross-functional teams.
- Support team growth and resourcing in line with programme demands and business objectives.
- Work closely with Procurement, Quality, and Logistics to ensure effective supplier management throughout the project lifecycle.
About You
- Proven experience leading electrical systems delivery at Principal Engineer level, or as a Senior Engineer ready to step up, within automotive or aerospace environments.
- Strong background in model-based systems engineering, with experience using tools such as Obeo Designer or similar platforms.
- Deep technical understanding of automotive electrical architectures, software integration, and system-level functionality.
- Working knowledge of vehicle communication networks including CAN, LIN, and automotive Ethernet, along with diagnostics.
- Experience managing complex, multi-stakeholder engineering projects, including risk identification and mitigation.
- Familiarity with structured quality frameworks such as APQP, Six Sigma, FMEA, and PPAP.
- A confident communicator who can influence at all levels, build strong relationships, and lead under pressure.
- Degree-qualified in Electronics, Automotive Engineering, Control Systems, or a related discipline (or equivalent experience).
- Full UK driving licence.
