Requests for unique and niche designs have increased during 2024 as T.50 customer deliveries have begun and the car’s profile as the ultimate supercar for the road has grown following media reviews and international promotional appearances. The new division, with an independent structure and engineering team, has been formed to meet these special requests now and in the future.

As a Lead Engineer at Gordon Murray Advanced Engineering, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the Head of Special Vehicles in the technical design & development of body structures for unique vehicle programmes.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of lightweight metallic and composite body structures, ensuring compliance with performance, safety, and aesthetic standards.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the engineering team, fostering innovation and excellence.
  • Work closely with interdisciplinary teams, including design, aerodynamics, quality, purchasing, and manufacturing, to ensure seamless integration of body structures into the project.
  • Define requirements for each system/assembly based on cascaded vehicle level targets and requirements.
  • Carry out risk assessments and FMEA during the earliest conceptual stages of design to identify risks and help eliminate or reduce failures.
  • Develop and implement testing and validation protocols to ensure the durability, reliability, and functionality of body structures design.
  • Create and maintain working level plans, communicated with the design team and the project, to manage the delivery of body structures components to project timing requirements.
  • Working knowledge of either metallic BIW components and assemblies or carbon fibre laminate and sandwich structure design, including familiarity with supplier materials such as lightweight and high-strength aluminium, fibres, resin systems, sandwich core materials, and bonded assembly adhesives.
  • Experience in component tools design for manufacturability.

Skills, Knowledge, and Expertise

  • Proven experience in the design and engineering of high-performance composite or lightweight metallic structures.
  • Bachelor's/Master’s degree in mechanical, automotive, aerospace engineering, or similar.
  • Experience as a Senior Engineer focusing on body structures design, preferably in Automotive, Motorsport, or Aerospace industries.
  • Deep knowledge of composite or metallic structures design, development, and optimization, with hands-on experience using relevant engineering tools and software.
  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with a track record of leading engineering teams successfully.
  • A creative thinker passionate about pushing engineering boundaries.
  • Organized, persuasive, resourceful, flexible, ambitious, self-directed, and passionate about achieving objectives, with the ability to challenge existing processes.
  • Excellent communication skills for internal and external stakeholders.
