The Role
We\’re looking for a friendly, knowledgeable and motivated Garden Centre Assistant to join our Garden Sundries & Birdcare Department. This is an active, customer-facing role supporting the Garden Sundries Manager to maintain well-presented displays, offer expert advice and ensure safe, compliant product management across the department.

What the Job is Really Like
Customer-Focused & Product-Involved
You\’ll spend your day helping customers find the right products, explaining the different features and uses of garden care, birdcare and wildlife ranges. You\’ll also maintain attractive and fully stocked displays that make shopping easy and enjoyable.
Physical, Practical & Varied
Expect a mix of indoor and outdoor activity — from unpacking deliveries and arranging seasonal promotions to assisting with heavier items. A reasonable level of physical fitness is helpful as some lifting and stock movement is required.
Team-Oriented & Fast-Paced
You\’ll work closely with colleagues across the garden sundries and wider gardening teams, adapting to busy seasonal peaks and supporting other areas when needed.
Key Responsibilities
- Welcome customers warmly and offer helpful, friendly service.
- Maintain garden sundries and birdcare areas so they\’re clean, safe and well-stocked.
- Provide accurate, confident advice on products such as feeds, weedkillers, tools and bird food.
- Support with receiving, checking and pricing deliveries.
- Keep displays tidy, safe and visually appealing in line with company standards.
- Promote linked sales and Gordale loyalty cards to enhance the customer experience.
- Report any damaged products, hazards or COSHH-related spills promptly.
- Uphold excellent housekeeping, safety and compliance standards across all areas.
Skills & Qualities We\’re Looking For
- Friendly and approachable with strong customer service skills.
- Good practical knowledge or interest in gardening and outdoor products.
- Reliable, well-organised and able to take initiative.
- Physically fit and comfortable with active, hands-on work.
- Able to follow health & safety procedures carefully.
- Team player with a positive attitude and flexible approach.
Hours & Benefits
- Full-time: 42.5 hours per week
- 5 days per week, Tuesday to Saturday
- From £12.21 per hour, increasing with service
