As the pace of global policymaking on AI continues to accelerate, we are hiring a Head of Public Policy to lead our Policy Team. We are looking for a strategic visionary and highly experienced policy operator to help us shape a dynamic global policy environment that enables our technologies to be used for scientific discovery and cutting-edge products that improve billions of lives.

The role

This is a leadership position where you’ll lead a team developing global policy strategy and executing policy priorities for Google DeepMind’s scientific breakthroughs and emerging technologies.

Key responsibilities

  • Advise senior executives on critical policy matters and engagements with high-level government and civil society leaders globally, with an emphasis on the UK, EU, and US.
  • Lead and manage the Public Policy team, and work with team members and cross-functional partners at Google DeepMind and Google to develop and implement global policy strategies for first-in-kind technologies.
  • Lead the development of Google DeepMind’s positions on emerging and relevant public policy issues, working closely with our outstanding technical teams and researchers.
  • Drive key operational projects and processes, and partner strategically with GDM leadership, proactively identifying risks and opportunities to shape priorities and improve operations.
  • Build and maintain global connections with senior policymakers, policy leads in peer tech companies, and the wider policy community.
  • Partner and collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to analyse policy initiatives, advise on risks and opportunities, and develop company policy positions and messaging.
  • Provide and share insight into relevant emerging political and policy trends, helping to craft our strategy, anticipate issues, risks and opportunities.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience in government relations and/or public affairs in the UK, EU, and/or US.
  • Demonstrated experience developing and successfully achieving policy initiatives with first-in-kind technologies, and building positive relationships with constituencies and coalitions in the process.
  • Strong executive presence and ability to interact effectively at the highest levels of the organisation.
  • Proven ability to lead and inspire high performing, cross-functional teams in a global, fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated public speaking ability.
  • Strong existing relationships and credibility with senior leaders at government entities, civil society organisations, and other third parties relevant to AI governance.
  • Experience leading a global policy team covering multiple regions with complex regulatory environments.
  • Senior-level experience in a government entity or international organisation.
  • Recognised thought leader on AI and/or technology & science policy matters.
  • Advanced degree in relevant field.

About you

This role requires extensive experience working in policy development and stakeholder management and a background in emerging technology or science policy. You’ll need detailed knowledge and experience of global policy-making environments.

  • Forward-thinking leader combined with consistent track record of achieving successful legislative and regulatory outcomes for new technologies.
  • Strategic, creative, and proactive approach to achieving policy outcomes and practicable regulatory environments.
  • Strong existing network of contacts and relationships at leading global institutions relevant to AI governance, including governments and civil society organisations.
  • Recognised leader on AI and/or technology & science policy matters.
  • Passion to steer the development of AI for positive social benefit.
