This is an opportunity to join an outstanding team at the forefront of AI research and development. We’re seeking a highly skilled specialist writer to join the communications team at Google DeepMind to focus on communicating our work across key priority areas, including: science, the societal benefits of AI, and AGI. This role plays a crucial part in amplifying the Executive voice, managing public perception, and engaging key stakeholders across a multitude of platforms which extends beyond content creation.

This role involves crafting compelling narratives through blog posts, articles, and other written content, translating complex initiatives into accessible and impactful stories. Partnering with the COO on specific writing assignments, helping to articulate the vision and the company’s mission. You will collaborate closely with teams across the company including: internal and external communications teams, senior leaders, researchers as well as the COO and their team to craft compelling narratives that bring our groundbreaking discoveries and innovative developments to life for a variety of audiences, both internal and external.

The Role: We are looking for an exceptional and dynamic communications specialist to partner with the COO and their office to amplify the vision, thought leadership and voice of the COO. Crafting impactful messages across diverse channels including speeches, presentations, social media, press releases, and internal communications. This role will also play a crucial role in Executive Event management for the COO. Capable of planning, implementing, and managing complex communication aimed at enhancing the organizational brand and fostering robust engagement.

  • Key responsibilities:
  • Strategic Executive Content Creation: Partner directly with the COO and their team, providing strategic thought leadership content for a range of communication channels. Accountable for partnering with relevant teams to develop COO external engagement plans throughout the year.
  • Work with colleagues across the GDM Comms team, conceptualize, research and edit high-impact executive messages, speeches, social media posts and talking points for external and internal communications focused on Google DeepMind's strategic priority areas: the societal benefits of advanced AI and AGI; AI and science; and key COO projects.
  • Translate complex information into clear, concise, and impactful narratives developing scripts and speech content for ongoing executive communications.
  • Understand, maintain and refine the distinct voice and style of COO, while ensuring brand consistency and alignment with Google DeepMind's overall messaging.
  • Proactively identify storytelling opportunities within GDM priority areas that align with Google DeepMind's mission and communications goals.
  • Collaborate deeply with researchers, engineers, policy experts, and project leads to ensure accuracy, depth, and nuance in all written content.
  • Executive Event Management: Provide comprehensive communications support for high-visibility executive speaking engagements, and internal events. Lead on the logistics related to executive communications, including content preparation and presentation development.
  • Proactively identify opportunities to amplify an executive presence and messaging at events, coordinating social media coverage and post-event communications.
  • Media Relations & Public Affairs: The key point of contact for the office of COO media inquiries and managing relationships with journalists. Plan and coordinate COO media engagements, and interviews, in coordination with the GDM Comms team.
  • Analyze media coverage and public perception polling and define external communications plans based on insights.
  • Research & Awareness: Stay deeply informed about Google DeepMind's research, key projects, and progress in strategic priority areas. Keep abreast of external trends, research, social issues, and AI industry news to ensure content is relevant, timely, and informed by global context.
  • Ensure all communications align with the company's overall business objectives, COO vision, and mission. Collaborate and align with Marketing, People & Culture, OCEO and other key departments to ensure consistent and aligned internal and external messaging.
  • Maintain brand consistency across all communication and platforms.
  • Social media Optimization: Develop, plan, and execute comprehensive social media strategies for the COO. Lead content creation for executive social channels, including multimedia assets. Monitor social media accounts, analyze metrics, and optimize performance.
  • Coordinate social coverage for key events, announcements, and milestones. Stay updated on industry trends and emerging communication strategies. Measure the success of executive content, including social media interaction and other key metrics, and adapt future content accordingly to encourage maximum engagement.

About You: In order to set you up for success at Google DeepMind, we look for the following skills and experience:

  • Writing & Communication Expertise: Strong experience in speechwriting. Must have experience writing for the technology industry, with a demonstrable ability to understand and communicate complex scientific and technical concepts related to AI, machine learning, and related fields is critical.
  • Experience in staffing senior executives for public engagements, setting them up for success to deliver key messages and uphold brand consistency.
  • Proven ability to interview subject matter experts and translate sophisticated ideas into powerful communications content.
  • Previous experience working directly with senior executives in a communications or speechwriting capacity.
  • Technical Acumen & Storytelling: A strong technical interest is essential; an understanding of AI, AGI, Machine Learning and AI-powered scientific innovations will be highly advantageous.
  • Experience with storytelling and content creation across different mediums — multimedia, visual storytelling, social media, blogs, keynotes.
  • Ability to convey complex technical information in clear, creative, and compelling ways to engage with a range of audiences.
  • Adaptability & Collaboration: High level of emotional intelligence; strong interpersonal skills and adaptability; ability to build strong relationships and trust with executive leadership, colleagues, media, and external stakeholders.
  • Responsive and resilient to challenging, ambiguous, and sometimes changing objectives; able to prioritize and work on projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Creativity with a flexible approach, adjusting style and tone when needed; working collaboratively on iterations to achieve the right outcome.
  • Social media management: Strong understanding of social media platforms, digital marketing trends, and content management systems; proficiency in using various communication tools and software, including analytics platforms.
