Head of Building Safety in London

A leading housing association in the London Area is looking to appoint an experienced Head of Building Safety to provide strategic leadership across its building safety and fire safety functions.
This is a senior role with responsibility for ensuring the organisation maintains a robust, compliant and resident-focused approach to building safety across its housing portfolio.
You will lead the development and delivery of the organisation's building safety strategy, providing expert advice to senior leadership and ensuring that statutory, regulatory and organisational requirements are consistently met.
The role will suit an experienced building safety professional who combines strong technical knowledge with the ability to lead teams, influence senior stakeholders and drive continuous improvement across a complex housing environment.
Key Responsibilities
Provide strategic leadership for building safety, fire safety and associated compliance activities across the housing portfolio.
Lead and continuously improve the organisation's Building Safety Strategy, policies, procedures and assurance frameworks.
Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and regulatory requirements, including the Building Safety Act, Fire Safety Act, Fire Safety Regulations and associated housing safety requirements.
Provide senior-level advice and assurance to Directors, Executive leadership, Boards and relevant governance committees.
Oversee the delivery of fire risk assessments, building safety case information, remedial works, fire safety programmes and associated compliance activity.
Ensure appropriate systems are in place to identify, assess, manage and escalation building safety risks.
Provide effective oversight of safety-critical programmes, ensuring risks and remedial actions are appropriately prioritised and monitored through to completion.
Lead the organisation's approach to higher-risk buildings, including building safety management, safety case requirements and engagement with relevant regulatory bodies where required.
Work closely with Asset Management, Repairs, Compliance, Development, Property Services and Customer teams to ensure building safety is embedded across the organisation.
Develop and maintain effective building safety assurance, governance, reporting and audit processes.
Ensure accurate and reliable building safety data is maintained and used to inform strategic decision-making.
Monitor performance against statutory and regulatory requirements, identifying areas of risk and implementing appropriate improvement plans.
Lead relationships with external consultants, fire safety specialists, contractors and other professional advisers.
Oversee the quality and effectiveness of external fire safety and building safety services, ensuring appropriate standards and value for money.
Ensure resident engagement and communication are incorporated into building safety processes, particularly where works or safety measures have a direct impact on residents.
Represent the organisation externally with regulators, local authority partners, contractors, professional bodies and sector stakeholders.
Lead, develop and support building safety professionals, creating a strong culture of accountability, technical excellence and continuous improvement.
About You
You will be an experienced senior building safety or fire safety professional with substantial experience working within social housing, a housing association, local authority or another complex residential environment.
You will have:
Significant experience leading building safety and/or fire safety functions within social housing.
Strong knowledge of the Building Safety Act, Fire Safety Act, Fire Safety Regulations and wider housing safety legislation.
Experience managing building safety risk across a sizeable residential property portfolio.
Strong understanding of Fire Risk Assessments, fire safety remediation, higher-risk buildings and building safety management.
Experience developing and implementing building safety strategies, policies and assurance frameworks.
Experience providing advice, assurance and reporting to Executive-level stakeholders and/or Boards.
Strong understanding of regulatory compliance, risk management, audit and assurance.
Experience managing contractors, consultants and specialist professional services.
Strong leadership and people management experience, with the ability to develop technical teams and drive performance.
Excellent communication skills and the ability to explain complex safety and regulatory issues clearly to non-technical stakeholders.
A proactive approach to identifying risk and implementing practical improvements.
A strong commitment to resident safety and delivering high-quality services.
