The successful candidate will manage a varied caseload of mental health matters, representing clients detained under both civil and forensic sections of the Mental Health Act. The role involves providing expert legal advice, preparing cases, and undertaking advocacy before the First-tier Tribunal (Mental Health).
In addition to managing your own caseload, you will play a key role in supporting and mentoring junior team members, contributing to the continued growth and success of the department. You will work closely with the Directors and collaborate with colleagues across the firm to ensure the highest standards of client care and professional practice.
Key Responsibilities- Manage a caseload of mental health tribunal and related matters.
- Represent clients detained under civil and forensic sections of the Mental Health Act.
- Conduct advocacy before the First-tier Tribunal (Mental Health).
- Provide supervision, guidance and support to junior team members and paralegals.
- Ensure compliance with Legal Aid Agency (LAA) requirements, SRA regulations, and firm policies.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, hospitals, healthcare professionals, and other stakeholders.
- Contribute to the continued development and growth of the Mental Health Department.
- Deliver exceptional client care while managing complex and sensitive matters.
- Qualified Solicitor with a current Practising Certificate.
- Member of the Law Society Mental Health Accreditation Scheme, or actively working towards accreditation.
- Demonstrable experience handling mental health tribunal work and representing detained patients.
- Strong advocacy skills and experience appearing before the First-tier Tribunal (Mental Health).
- Sound knowledge of Legal Aid and public funding within mental health law.
- Excellent communication, organisational, and case management skills.
- Experience supervising, mentoring, or supporting junior colleagues would be advantageous.
- Self-motivated, proactive, and able to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Ability to manage a demanding caseload while maintaining high standards of professionalism and client care.
