Job Summary
The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as caregiver to the resident during the scheduled work period in long‑term care. The NA provides resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance to an assigned resident under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN). Knowledge of and delivery of age‑appropriate care related to the physical and psychological needs of the resident are performed as per the care plan. The NA is considered a member of the nursing team and is expected to follow infection prevention and control policies, as well as personal protective equipment (PPE) use. The NA assists with basic health‑care needs including daily living activities (e.g., bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing), recording vital signs, providing psychosocial support, and other personal care. The NA assists residents in transferring, repositioning, and walking using correct techniques and equipment, and also provides range‑of‑motion and passive exercises. The NA completes tasks related to food preparation and dining, creating a positive dining experience for the resident, assists with meals and snacks, provides water and supplements as appropriate. The NA aids providers and nursing staff members with procedures, if needed, documents resident interactions and outcomes related to resident care, behavior, activity, and dietary. The NA communicates changes in the resident’s condition and care concerns to the charge nurse, collects non‑invasive body fluid specimens, gathers vital signs, provides housekeeping and laundry services, assists with wellness and recreational programs, and encourages resident participation. The NA may also participate in departmental/organizational committees and task forces as needed.
Qualifications
- High school graduate or GED preferred, but not required.
- Minimum age of 16. Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
- Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing, or state‑certified CNA within four months of date into the position by enrolling in a training program or being in the process of obtaining certification through endorsement. CNA training and certification are required and provided by the facility.
- Successfully complete yearly department‑specific competency testing and maintain a record of continuing education credits for each year. A minimum of 12 hours of continuing education are required annually and all department‑specific certifications must be maintained.
- When applicable, registered with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry for applicable states.
- Depending on facility and responsibilities, this role may classify as a Sanford Category II Driver requiring a motor‑vehicle report and proof of a valid driver’s license. The candidate must also be medically qualified to perform the essential driving functions of this position per Sanford Driving Policy.
