Fibre-Optic Systems Design Engineer
About Us
At G&H, we're expanding our Fibre Optic R&D team in Torquay, Devon. As a leader in the development of cutting-edge optical technologies, we specialize in products that serve a diverse range of markets. Our innovations include high-power optical amplifiers and transmitter sub-systems for satellite communications, advanced acousto-optic devices for quantum technologies, and photonic integrated circuits for next-generation optical components and systems. We are seeking a skilled Optical Systems Design Engineer to join our global R&D team and contribute to the design, prototype assembly, and testing of fibre-optic and photonic-based sub-systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Design & Development: Lead the design and development of photonic and fibre-optic components, modules, and sub-systems, leveraging G&H's cutting-edge fibre-optic and opto-electronic technologies.
- Cross-Disciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with a multidisciplinary team, including mechanical and electronic design engineers, to create innovative products that push the boundaries of optical technology.
- Prototype Assembly & Testing: Engage in hands-on prototype assembly and rigorous testing to ensure the highest standards of product performance and reliability.
- Customer Engagement: Clearly and effectively present design results and technical information to both internal teams and external customers, ensuring alignment and satisfaction.
What We're Looking For
- Education: A degree in Engineering, Physics, or a related field is required. A PhD in a relevant discipline is a strong advantage.
- Expertise: A broad knowledge base in fibre-optics, photonics, and related technologies is essential. Experience with high-power fibre lasers/amplifiers, non-linear optics, photonic integrated circuits, or acousto-optics is highly desirable.
- Independence: A self-starter with the ability to independently drive projects forward, troubleshoot complex issues, and deliver results with minimal supervision.
- Additional Skills: Experience in the design and development of fibre-optic and free-space transmission systems (analogue, digital, coherent) is a plus. The ability to generate proposals and manage both the financial and technical aspects of development projects is also advantageous.
