HSBC Asset Management (AM), the investment management business of the HSBC Group, serves HSBC's worldwide customer base of retail and private clients, intermediaries, corporates and institutions invested in both segregated accounts and pooled funds. HSBC Asset Management fulfils its purpose of connecting HSBC's clients with investment opportunities around the world through an international network of offices in approximately 30 countries, delivering global capabilities with local market insight.
We have an opportunity within HSBC Asset Management Private Credit/Lending business for an Investment Director. In the UK and across Europe, HSBC Bank are the leading provider of debt to mid-market private equity sponsor owned businesses and the Direct Lending team will benefit from access to this origination pipeline. The role will report to the Head of Direct Lending and the team is part of the broader Private Credit business in Asset Management reporting to the Head of Private Credit and through to the CEO of Alternatives. Private Credit also includes Infrastructure Debt, Venture Debt with the potential to grow. The team focuses on providing senior secured loans to mid-market borrowers across Europe. The team works together analysing new transaction opportunities, taking them through due diligence and executing loans. Once executed, the team will also undertake portfolio monitoring. The transaction structures can be complex, and the depth of analysis required on each transaction is significant requiring in-depth analysis of significant volumes of information.
In this role you will:
- Be responsible for sourcing new investment opportunities for the full range of Direct Lending strategies managed by HSBC Asset Management across the lower mid-market and core mid-market in Europe.
- Lead a deal team through the due diligence and documentation of new investments, preparing high quality investment committee papers, presenting opportunities to Investment Committee and maintaining relationships with borrowers during ongoing portfolio management post deal execution.
- Leverage strong market relationships to position our strategies for new investment opportunities. Relationships will need to be developed and maintained across Financial Sponsors, Advisers, Borrowers and HSBC Origination teams.
- Have strong knowledge of legal terms, managing through the competitive dynamics of a transaction process while maintaining discipline on important protections.
- Maintain ongoing oversight of investments post completion including involvement in any investments showing signs of stress or distress.
- Coach junior team members to ensure sharing of best practices and continued technical development on modelling, credit analysis, legal terms, etc.
- Help to promote the direct lending capability through fundraising as required. Some involvement in investor meetings in Europe may be required.
To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:
- Relevant Director level experience gained in Private Credit / Lending and/or Leveraged Finance space, with a focus on underwriting credit risk and the allocation of capital.
- Demonstrate a high success rate in deal origination backed up by evidence of a demonstrable network across financial sponsors and advisers in the European market (ideally core mid-market).
- Additional fluency in a core European language (ideally German) in addition to English is essential.
- Ability to analyse complex financial data and information and create easily digestible content, reports and presentations for a varied audience including internal colleagues and teams and external client stakeholders.
- Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to engender a 'Trusted Advisor' status across an internal and external client base.
- Strong analytical skills including working with financial models and an understanding of the fundamentals of investment appraisal.
- Hold a relevant professional qualification such as IMC, CFA, ACCA/ACA.
- This role is based in London and will require some travel across mainland Europe.
