This is a Consultant Ophthalmologist post designed to provide sub-specialist Glaucoma and Cataract services for patients of the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust. The job is a pan trust appointment with duties based at Boston Pilgrim Hospital with the possibility of commitments at other sites. This is a replacement post for which the person appointed will be required to devote substantially the whole of their time to the duties of the post. Applicants may elect to work whole time or part time. If the successful applicant chooses to work part time, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.
The United Lincoln Hospitals Trust provides ophthalmic services to a population in excess of 750,000. The service is based in two main sites in Boston and Lincoln, with peripheral sites in Louth, Gainsborough (attached to Lincoln), and Grantham, Skegness, and Spalding (attached to Boston) providing additional outpatient services. This post is currently based at Lincoln County Hospital, Lincoln, with some duties in the peripheral sites attached. The post has been developed to assist in the delivery and expansion of the current service and to cope with increasing demands in Medical Retina. The post holder will also help the department meet the challenges of the 18-week wait.
Main duties of the job
- The Appointee will be expected, in conjunction with colleagues, to provide a comprehensive Ophthalmic service supporting the provision of an effective countywide service and contribute towards achieving the 18-week wait across the whole eye department.
- He/she will be expected to carry out teaching duties as required, participate in the Postgraduate Medical Education program, and in the teaching of ophthalmic trainee staff.
- They will be involved in undergraduate teaching for Nottingham and Leicester Medical Schools, education of nursing staff, and other clinical professions as appropriate.
- They will attend Clinical Audit and Departmental Team meetings, play an active role in clinical audits, and report critical incidents.
- They will also participate in regional and national audits.
- The appointee will be expected to offer both a vitreoretinal and general ophthalmology service, with particular emphasis on high-volume cataract surgery to meet contractual obligations related to the 18-week wait.
- They will contribute to service development and expansion planning.

Job responsibilities
On call commitment: The departments in Lincoln and Boston operate a cross-site cover model with alternate weeks on call for the county. The post holder will participate in a 1 in 6, category A out-of-hours rota, with some weeks covering the entire county and others only the base hospital. An on-call supplement of 5% of the annual salary will be paid, and work during public holidays will be compensated with time off in lieu. The post requires cooperation with the Trust's appraisal scheme, focusing on professional development, performance review, and service quality improvement.

- Qualifications
- FRCS, FRCOphth, or equivalent
- On the specialist register for Ophthalmology
- Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practice
- Fellowship in Vitreo-retinal or Cataract surgery or a subspecialist interest
- Relevant higher degree or equivalent
- Fellowship in Glaucoma or Cataract
- Thorough training and experience in Glaucoma surgery
- Ability to perform high-volume cataract surgery
- Experience in clinical audit and recent presentation of findings
- Ability to work independently in delivering services
- Good communication skills, both written and verbal
