We are recruiting for an Intermediate Quantity Surveyor to join a specialist structural and groundworks contractor delivering complex projects across London. This role suits someone who is slightly more progressed than junior level, has a solid grounding in commercial principles, and is now ready to take the next step in their QS career.
This is a business that works very much from a subcontractor perspective, so applicants must be keen to understand costs, risk, and value from that side of the fence - not purely main contractor commercial management.
Project Exposure
- Basement construction and enabling works
- Foundations and substructures
- Reinforced concrete (RC) frames
- Structural steelworks
- Structural works within existing buildings
- Lift shafts, underpinning, and complex alterations
The workload is mainly structural, not trade-heavy packages.
The Role
You’ll be given real responsibility from the outset, with support and mentoring to help you progress. Key responsibilities include:
- Assisting with and managing project costs and budgets
- Pricing work packages and variations from a subcontractor POV
- Identifying, tracking, and pricing all variations
- Supporting applications for payment and valuations
- Working closely with site teams, engineers, and directors
- Developing strong commercial awareness across live projects
The company is happy to invest time and training, but they want someone who already has a base level of understanding and ambition.
What They’re Looking For
- Intermediate QS level (or strong Assistant QS ready to step up)
- Experience or exposure to groundworks, RC, structures, or civils
- Commercially aware and detail-driven
- Comfortable pricing variations and understanding cost build-ups
- Open-minded and willing to learn the subcontractor way of working
- Ambitious and progression-focused
This role is not suited to someone senior or set in their ways, or anyone looking to shortcut into a Commercial Manager position.
Whats on Offer
- £40,000+ salary, depending on experience
- Monday to Friday working pattern
- Long-term role with a growing specialist contractor
- Hands-on mentorship and clear progression route
- Exposure to complex, high-value structural projects
- Opportunity to genuinely grow within the business
This is a strong opportunity for a capable, developing QS who wants responsibility, progression, and real commercial exposure within a specialist subcontractor environment.
