Job Title: Head of Mechanical Engineering

Location: Plymouth - Hybrid 2+ days per week on-site

Role Type: Permanent

Salary: £70,000 - £75,000 depending on experience + benefits

Our client, an established engineering consultancy, require an experienced Head of Mechanical Engineer to join and lead their multi-disciplined team based in Plymouth.

Joining an established function of ~80 engineers you will work collaboratively with the Customer and internal engineering teams to provide leadership, technical direction, and delivery oversight across engineering activities supporting nuclear & non-nuclear mechanical and infrastructure assets on site.

What the role of the Head of Mechanical Engineering entails:

Some of the main duties of the Head of Mechanical Engineering will include:

  • Ensure engineering activities are delivered in accordance with relevant standards, regulatory requirements, and company governance processes.
  • Support engineering delivery across the full project lifecycle including concept development, design, implementation, commissioning, and operational support.
  • Review and approve technical documentation prior to customer submission, ensuring technical integrity, regulatory compliance, and safety considerations are addressed.
  • Support configuration management activities, ensuring engineering documentation, drawings, and system records are maintained and controlled.
  • Provide technical oversight to facility modifications, infrastructure upgrades, and asset lifecycle management activities.
  • Liaise with multi-disciplinary engineering teams and project stakeholders to ensure integration across engineering disciplines.
  • Support planning, risk management, and progress reporting activities associated with engineering delivery.
  • Contribute to Authorisation Group meetings and other governance forums as required.
  • Support installation, commissioning, and testing activities where required to ensure engineering solutions are successfully implemented.

What experience you need to be the successful Head of Mechanical Engineering:

  • Degree in Engineering or relevant technical discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
  • Previous experience in a relevant / similar Engineering role within a highly regulated or safety-critical industry.
  • Demonstrable experience leading engineering teams or coordinating multidisciplinary engineering activities.
  • Strong knowledge of several of the following mechanical systems including; HVAC, MEP, building services, process plant, industrial refrigeration, chilled water, cooling systems, boilers, pumps, heat exchangers, compressed air, utilities, facilities engineering and mechanical services.
  • Experience delivering engineering solutions across the full asset lifecycle including design, modification, maintenance, and operational support.
  • Strong understanding of engineering governance, technical assurance, and configuration management.
  • Experience engaging directly with customers and stakeholders in a technical delivery environment.
