Role Overview

As a Principal Product Safety Engineer, you will sit within the dedicated Product Safety Discipline and embed directly into key programme teams. You will lead hazard identification, risk analysis, and safety scheme development alongside subsystem Technical Authorities. Your mission is to ensure hazards are either eliminated or managed As Low As Reasonably Practicable (ALARP), building robust safety cases grounded in rigorous assurance evidence.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safety Case Development: Lead product safety activities for allocated equipment areas and major subsystems, building safety arguments supported by evidence and technical artifacts.
  • Hazard & Risk Management: Support Technical Authority teams with hazard logs, risk management, and mitigation strategies; verify submission quality within the Hazard Log.
  • Facilitation & Leadership: Organise and lead HAZIDs and safety review meetings, providing thought leadership while mentoring and reviewing the work of junior safety engineers.
  • Subsystem Collaboration: Work alongside Technical Authorities to evaluate key complex technologies and influence the integrity of final design solutions.

What We Are Looking For

Essential

  • Proven experience in Product Safety Management processes and techniques.
  • Experience spanning multiple phases of the Life Cycle Management (LCM) framework (or equivalent engineering lifecycle).
  • Familiarity with key defence and safety standards such as Def Stan 00-056 / 00-055, DSA-02, JSP430, MIL-STD-882E, ANEP77, or BS EN 61508.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to follow complex technical arguments and influence design teams.

Desirable

  • Domain experience within the Maritime / Naval sector (experience with fire certification is a strong advantage).
