This role at Active Travel England is available specifically to people who have left prison (or received a community sentence) within the last 5 years through a scheme called Going Forward into Employment (GFiE). Active Travel England (ATE) is the government’s executive agency responsible for making walking, wheeling and cycling the preferred choice for everyone to get around in England. About the job: Active Travel England (ATE) is enabling people nationwide to be more active by making streets safe and accessible for walking, wheeling and cycling. We do this by building capability across the country to deliver high‑quality networks, routes and places. At the heart of everything we do is raising standards in street design, to ensure our country’s streets become safer and more accessible.

The Technical Support Team sits at the heart of ATE, providing essential support across three key areas: Planning, Inspectorate, and Regional Management. This team ensures that ATE’s public‑facing services run efficiently and meet deadlines by managing information and maintaining core databases, upholding strong record‑keeping principles, and reporting progress against key targets. The Inbox Manager & Directorate Support role will play a vital role in keeping the team on track to meet its objectives.

We are looking for a driven and motivated self‑starter who is enthusiastic about being a part of ATE and will ensure that all inbox correspondence is dealt with professionally and punctually, whilst also providing administrative support on day‑to‑day corporate activities.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Oversee the management of casework inboxes, ensuring all planning consultations, design assurance requests and correspondence are allocated and responded to within appropriate timeframes.
  • Conduct initial prioritisation to identify urgent or high‑priority tasks and escalate to senior staff as needed.
  • Ensure that Planning Case Officers, Inspectors and Regional Managers are informed of thoughtful emails and follow up to ensure actions are completed.
  • Allocate resources for Freedom of Information requests, monitor deadlines, and compile responses.
  • Provide administrative support across a range of tasks, including compiling monthly and quarterly reports, financial reporting and payments, performance tracking, directorate communications, and other core corporate functions.
  • Build strong working relationships with colleagues in the Technical Support Team and across the wider organisation to effectively support senior leaders and teams.
  • Organise team meetings, including scheduling, agenda setting, minute‑taking and circulating updates.
  • Assist with the coordination of training sessions and team development days.
  • Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date records by updating central databases, developing and improving processes, and ensuring information is easily retrievable when needed.
  • Cascade corporate messages appropriately across the division to ensure consistent communication.
  • Handle sensitive information with discretion and confidentiality, ensuring proper labelling, storage, and handling of documents.
