Wanstead Hospital is seeking a well-rounded and experienced veterinary surgeon, ideally from a hospital background, to join as a senior GP vet in a large hospital setting on a full-time basis. The role focuses on client care, communication, and leading our GP team in a fast-paced hospital environment. The successful candidate will be passionate about training and guiding junior and trainee colleagues to ensure they start their careers well and thrive in a busy London hospital setting.
The Wanstead Hospital team is looking for a competent GP vet who is familiar with a fast-paced hospital setting and is ready to progress into a senior position to help lead our team of GP vets. A focus on training and guiding junior and trainee colleagues is of utmost importance to provide the best start to their careers. In addition to your clinical GP duties, some of your senior duties will include:
- Ensuring a high and improving standard of evidence-based clinical care amongst GP veterinary colleagues at the Hospital.
- Participating in and leading the clinical consulting, medical and surgical rota for Hospital GP vets.
- Acting as a Vet GDP advisor—actively supporting the development of new graduates.
- Encouraging excellent communication channels between the hospital team and the rest of the practice.
- Promoting a positive, productive working environment for GP colleagues in collaboration with the Head Vet and Hospital Manager.
- Fostering a culture of excellent working relationships within the Hospital and taking responsibility for high morale and team spirit.
- Encouraging participation in clinical CPD through a monthly journal club.
Your rota will be on a 6 weekly rotational basis made up of an average of 40 hours per week, inclusive of a 1:3 Saturday and 1:6 Sunday weekend rotation. This will enable you to work within all departments of the hospital, ranging across consulting, surgery, ward and ECC. You will be rotated to up to 2 bank holidays per year and be part of the last-resort on-call rotation. Wanstead Veterinary Hospital provides an excellent first opinion, emergency, critical care, and referral service to our clients and local network of 20 branches, working to the highest clinical standards. No day or caseload is the same with a wide pool of clients and internal referrals coming through the doors. There is state-of-the-art diagnostic support, with a CT scanner, a commercial laboratory, a strong medical team, and experienced surgeons routinely conducting advanced orthopaedic, soft tissue, and minimally invasive surgery, all available on site. You will be working alongside a large collaborative team consisting of approximately 25 vets, 27 RVNs, 14 SVNs, 7 VCAs and a large front-of-house team who are integral in maintaining excellent client care. You are fully supported by an established management structure including senior RVNs, two deputy head nurses, a head nurse, a head vet and a hospital manager.
Wanstead itself is on the outskirts of urban Essex, close to rural life. Transport links into London are strong with a short walk to a Central Line tube station. It is a beautiful area with green space and many amenities for your time off. Please note there is no on-site parking available and public transport is advised, but with stations and bus stops nearby you have plenty of choice.
The salary band for this senior position is £60,000 to £80,000 FTE per annum dependent on prior experience and allowing room for further professional growth within the role. A little snippet of the benefits you will receive as a Goddard vet:
