Welcome to Wanstead Hospital! We are looking for a well-rounded and experienced veterinary surgeon ideally from a hospital background, who is looking for that next step in their career, as a senior GP vet in a large hospital setting, to support our GP hospital team on a full-time basis.

Due to the footfall that comes through Wanstead Hospital, it is integral our future senior colleague is client focused and has a passion for client care and communication and sets the tone for the rest of the GP team.

About your new role! The Wanstead Hospital team are looking for a competent GP vet who is no stranger to a fast-paced hospital setting and is now looking to progress into a senior position, to help lead our team of GP vets. Being passionate about training and guiding our junior and trainee colleagues is of the utmost importance, to ensure they are given the best start to their career and can thrive in a busy London hospital environment.

In addition to your clinical GP duties, some of your senior duties will include:

  • Ensuring a high and improving standard of evidence-based clinical care amongst GP veterinary colleagues at the Hospital.
  • Participating and providing a lead in the clinical consulting, medical and surgical rota for Hospital GP vets.
  • Being a Vet GDP advisor - actively supporting the development of the new graduates.
  • Actively encouraging excellent communication channels between the hospital team and the rest of the practice.
  • Encouraging a positive, productive working environment for GP colleagues in collaboration with the Head Vet and Hospital Manager.
  • Fostering a culture of excellent working relationships within the Hospital and being responsible for the achievement of high morale and a strong team spirit.
  • Promoting the Hospital GP vets’ participation in clinical CPD through a monthly journal club.

Your rota will be on a 6 weekly rotational basis made up of an average of 40 hours per week inclusive of your 1:3 Saturday and 1:6 Sunday weekend rotation. This will enable you to work within all departments of the hospital, ranging across consulting, surgery, ward and ECC. You will be rota’d to up to 2 bank holidays per year and be included in the last resort on-call rotation.

Wanstead Veterinary Hospital provides an excellent first opinion, emergency, critical care, and referral service to our clients and local network of 20 branches and works to the highest clinical standards. No day or caseload is the same with such a wide pool of clients and internal referrals coming through the doors.

There is state of the art diagnostic support, with a CT scanner, a commercial laboratory, a strong medical team, and experienced surgeons routinely conducting advanced orthopaedic, soft tissue, and minimally invasive surgery all available on site. You will be working alongside a large collaborative team consisting of approximately 25 vets, 27 RVNs, 14 SVNs, 7 VCAs and a large front of house team who are integral in maintaining excellent client care. You are fully supported by an established management structure including senior RVN’s, 2 deputy head nurses, head nurse, head vet and hospital manager.

Wanstead itself is on the outskirts of urban Essex but is close enough to rural life for that countryside relief. Transport links into London do not get better than a short walk to a Central Line tube station! It is a beautiful area of London with lots of green space including the local Bluebell Woods. It also has a plethora of independent restaurants, bakeries, pubs and coffee houses to keep you busy and refreshed in your time off!

Please be aware there is no on-site parking available and public transport is advised, but with stations and bus stops a stone’s throw away you have plenty of choice.

  • The salary band for this senior position is £60,000 to £80,000 FTE per annum dependent on prior experience and allowing room for further professional growth within the role.
  • 6.6 weeks annual leave including bank holidays.

  • Up to £2,000 annual CPD allowance plus up to 5 paid CPD days.
