The Gas Operative (Support Engineer) will assist the Team Leader in activities related to locating and repairing public-reported gas escapes. The role involves making safe and/or repairing gas service pipes or mains, re-assessing previously visited escapes, laying mains and/or services, and carrying out mains/service isolations as a Support Operative.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the classification and programming of gas escapes, including testing, survey, detection, and diagnostic work on the network and in gas consumers' premises.
  • Receive instructions via data and verbal requests, plan and organize resources, and make arrangements to ensure efficient work execution.
  • Assist in laying, connecting, disconnecting, commissioning, decommissioning, and maintaining pipework, associated plant, and equipment, including non-routine work or specialist tasks.
  • Respond to emergencies, participate in standby duties, and assist in testing, surveying, detection, and diagnostic activities.
  • Ensure excavation, backfill, reinstatement, and repair work meet standards, including waste removal.
  • Provide training, advice, guidance, and support to teams and individuals involved in the operation and maintenance of the gas transportation system.
  • Offer advice and support to third parties operating near or on the gas transportation system.
  • Assist in gathering information and preparing reports, including technical documentation.
  • Manage the ordering, receipt, inspection, storage, stock control, and handling of equipment, goods, and materials according to standards and procedures.
  • Promote team working and development to achieve business objectives and improve performance.

Experience and Qualifications
