Overview
A shunter driver is responsible for the safe movement of large vehicles and trailers around construction sites, shipping yards, loading docks and similar environments. The role may vary depending on the site, but it always involves moving heavy machinery and handling trailers safely.
Responsibilities
- Ensuring safe movement of large vehicles and trailers around a construction site.
- Adhering to strict health and safety guidelines.
- Completing safety assessments.
- Inspecting vehicles and trailers.
- Coupling and uncoupling trailers.
- Safely parking trailers.
- Manoeuvring laden and un‑laden trailers.
- Ensuring handover procedures are correctly implemented when passing goods on to other workers.
Requirements
There are no formal qualifications required, but you should:
- Hold a full UK driving licence (may also be required to hold an LGV C+E licence).
- Possess a Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card if working on a construction site.
- Be enthusiastic, willing to learn and able to follow instructions.
Ways to Become a Shunter Driver
You could pursue a college course, an apprenticeship or apply directly to an employer.
- Level 2 Certificate in Construction Plant Operations or Level 3 Diploma in Construction and the Built Environment.
- Intermediate apprenticeship as a plant operator or NVQ/SVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations.
- Work as an assistant shunter driver to gain on‑site experience.

Salary
- Newly trained shunter drivers can start at £22,000.
- Experienced shunter drivers can earn up to £47,000*.
