Overview

We have an exciting opportunity to join the Commercial Department as a Casual Controllers/Coordinator, Route Pilot. This role offers you a chance to be part of a dynamic and fast-paced environment. The department primarily manages Rail Replacement services, covering TFL Overground, Underground, DLR, and Trams. Additionally, we support various national events with shuttle and park-and-ride services, as well as private sector company bus shuttle contracts. Route Pilots are placed at key locations along TFL or the Southeastern network. Pilots will guide drivers who are unsure of the route or have specifically requested support, helping ensure drivers follow the correct line of route and supporting more driving duties coverage while reducing the risk of incidents.

Route Pilot Role Responsibilities

  • Ensure drivers feel confident to operate their service. If you believe a driver is at risk, you are empowered to hold the vehicle and seek support from the Duty Manager.
  • Provide guidance and support without imposing yourself on confident drivers β€” step back when they are comfortable with the route.
  • Understand the incident management process and be able to support drivers in the event of an RTC.
  • Wear a designated hi-vis jacket while directing a driver. (The jacket will include wording on the back asking passengers to only approach when the bus is stationary.)
  • We are only looking for a small panel to take this on as regular weekend work.
  • If you’re interested in expanding your skill set and taking on this role, please complete the application.
