About Us

We are Gnosis Health, a Newcastle University spin-out emerging from world-leading research in digital health, clinical AI, and behavioural science. Our flagship platform, MAXine, is an AI-powered companion designed to support people living with chronic disease. Not as a chatbot. Not as a gimmick. But as a clinically grounded, patient-centred system that helps individuals make sense of symptoms, treatment, and daily life over time. MAXine sits at the intersection of clinical evidence, real-world patient behaviour, and applied AI that actually has to work in the real world. The company was co-founded by Professor Edward Meinert, drawing on over a decade of research across Oxford, Imperial, Harvard, and the NHS. We are now moving from research into real-world deployment, building the core engineering team that will take MAXine from strong foundations to national and international scale. You will be joining as one of the founding engineers. If you enjoy solving technically hard problems that actually matter to patients, you will fit in nicely.

About the Role

You will help build the backbone of MAXine: from the React Native mobile experience patients use daily, through to the cloud services and APIs that power clinical insight, AI workflows, and secure health data exchange. This is a senior generalist role for someone who thrives on breadth. It is not a feature-factory position. You will be shaping a platform that must balance usability, safety, performance, and clinical credibility, all at once.

What You Will Do

  • Design scalable backend services and APIs for patient and clinical workflows.
  • Architect secure data models with performance and compliance in mind.
  • Implement authentication, authorisation, and encryption appropriate for healthcare.
  • Build integrations with external systems, wearables, and health services.
  • Support data pipelines that enable AI model deployment and iteration.
  • Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting so problems are found before patients notice.
  • Contribute to technical documentation that people actually read.

What We Are Looking For

  • 4+ years of backend development experience.
  • Strong Python, Node.js, or Go skills.
  • Deep experience with PostgreSQL and schema design.
  • Hands-on cloud experience (AWS preferred).
  • Docker and container-based development experience.
  • Experience with backend testing practices, including unit and integration tests.
  • Strong security fundamentals.
  • Comfortable working in agile, fast-moving environments.

Nice to Have

  • Healthcare or life-sciences background.
  • HL7 FHIR, DICOM, or related standards.
  • Event-driven architectures and message queues.
  • Exposure to MLOps or model-serving workflows.

Practicalities

  • Location: Gnosis Health HQ, The Catalyst, 3 Science Square, Newcastle Helix
  • Compensation: £55K FTC TBD
  • Reports to: Co-founder & CTO, Jerrell Schivers

Why This Is Different

You will not be building another health dashboard. You will be building technology that emerges from rigorous university research, is shaped by real clinicians and patients, and is designed to scale responsibly in the NHS and beyond. We move fast, but we do not move recklessly. We care about elegance, but we care more about impact. Early team members will shape the engineering culture, technical direction, and product roadmap. There is genuine scope for growth into leadership roles as we scale. If that sounds like your kind of work, welcome aboard.
