Since 2016, Greater Manchester has been working collaboratively to respond to the opportunities and challenges of an ageing population, with a focus on reducing inequalities and supporting people to age well. In 2018, following the publication of our first Age-Friendly Strategy, Greater Manchester became the UK's first World Health Organization-recognised Age-Friendly City-Region. Our 2024-2034 Age-Friendly Strategy sets out an ambitious vision to make Greater Manchester a great place to grow older, improving the experience of mid and later life while tackling the inequalities that often widen with age.
About the role
This maternity cover role will lead the Ageing Well portfolio within the Greater Manchester Ageing Hub, delivering priorities set out in the Greater Manchester Age-Friendly Strategy. The post holder will provide strategic leadership across programmes including Live Well in Later Life, falls and frailty prevention, and other ageing well initiatives, working collaboratively with local authorities, NHS Greater Manchester, the VCFSE sector, academia and wider public sector partners to improve outcomes for older people and reduce health inequalities.
The successful candidate will be an experienced programme manager with strong partnership-building skills, able to work strategically while maintaining oversight of programme delivery. A strong understanding of the public health, adult social care and NHS landscape is essential, particularly from a locality and place-based perspective, alongside experience of working with locality place partnerships to drive integration, support preventative approaches and strengthen age-friendly priorities across Greater Manchester.
Key objectives for 12 months delivery in the post
- Support of the delivery of ‘Live Well in Later Life’ in relation to "Health Creation."
- Development and delivery of the Greater Manchester Falls and Frailty agenda, including coordination and development of the ‘Greater Manchester Ageing Well: Falls & Frailty Collaborative,’ along with implementation and delivery of the following:-
- Oversight of a range of key ageing well priorities in relation to older people such as physical activity, women’s health, older people’s mental health, gender-based violence, culture & creative health. (This list of other ageing well priorities will only be required if we successfully appoint a full-time secondment. This wouldn’t be required if we recruit on a part-time arrangement).
Other key duties and responsibilities
- Meeting schedule for the role, including chairing responsibilities.
- Line management of the Grade 6 Project and Policy Officer & potentially other posts in the team (involving general support, monthly 1-2-1's, and the delivery of 2x performance review appraisals (PRA's) throughout the 12 months (Line Management responsibilities will only be required if we successfully appoint a full-time secondment. This wouldn’t be required if we recruit on a part-time arrangement).
Required skills for the role
- Excellent programme and project management skills.
- System knowledge and strategic understanding of the Ageing Well agenda.
- Experience of financial and resource management.
- Strong partnership working and relationship management across health and care.
- Experience of co-production and lived experience approaches.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex information clearly to a range of audiences.
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and deliver high-quality outputs within deadlines.
