GMB's Southern Region is seeking applications for a Support Worker from committed individuals to join their team supporting the work of the Region. The post is a 1 year, Fixed Term Contract. GMB is one of the largest trade unions in the UK; we’re proud to represent over half a million people from across the professional spectrum and all walks of life.

This role will be primarily based in the regional finance & membership team working to the Regional Finance Officer, though the successful candidate needs to be aware that they may on occasions be expected to travel to other locations in the Region, and to cover between teams in the event of absences. This is a dynamic role that will allow the successful candidate to be actively involved in all areas of the finance & membership team's activities, but also helping to cover switchboard and assisting in other departments, when needed. This could also include supporting teams out on demonstrations and campaigns, and taking a leading role in handling all aspects of the office team’s social media activity.

The successful candidates will have:

  • Excellent administration and organising skills to a high standard.
  • Good standard of verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with a variety of people and organisations in a positive and helpful manner.
  • Good interpersonal skills, including having empathy and understanding with the issues faced by members in order to provide support to the region’s members.
  • Ability to produce work to a high standard, ensuring accuracy and close attention to detail.
  • Ability to be discreet with confidential and sensitive materials is essential and to make personal judgements as required, whilst adhering to GDPR and GMB policies.
  • Ability to exercise initiative in dealing with members’ problems and identifying solutions.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and frequently high-pressure environment both to a specific work programme and frequent on-demand, ad hoc requests, is essential.
  • Flexibility and ability to prioritise workload, undertake projects and work to deadlines, alongside day-to-day requests for assistance, often under pressure.
  • Strong data entry, IT skills and knowledge of data and communications platforms.
  • The ability to work flexibly in a team, independently and on your own initiative, and to co-operate with colleagues to ensure delivery of team targets.

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of using online membership systems, computer applications and platforms and the ability to use the internet for retrieving information.
  • Knowledge of using an understanding online systems, processes and regulations within GMB guidelines.
  • Excellent and accurate keyboard and IT skills, together with a readiness to use online databases.

Experience

  • Proven experience of organising and prioritising a high workload, working to tight deadlines, as part of a team and on their own using initiatives in coping with the demands of the post.
  • Experience of working with data and databases ensuring quality, integrity and accuracy of data.
  • Experience of working in membership services.
  • Possess a flexible attitude and a full range of administrative skills as outlined in the job description.
  • Be able to work on their own initiative to undertake duties in a professional and efficient manner.
  • Have an understanding of the GMB Union as well as commitment of the wider Trade Union and Labour movement.
  • Applicants must be prepared to work as a team member and the successful candidate would display strong interpersonal skills along with an ability to communicate effectively in challenging environments.
