GM Performance Power Units LLC is seeking a Power Unit Assembly Specification Coordinator to define, control, and release the build specifications for Formula 1 Power Unit assemblies, covering the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE), Energy Recovery System (ERS), and their interfaces. Based at the GMPPU facility in Concord, this role translates production and test plans into clear, controlled, and buildable assembly definitions.

Acting as the configuration focal point between Program Management, Engineering, Design, Assembly, Testing, Quality, Supply Chain, and Logistics, the role ensures that each Power Unit or sub-assembly is built to the correct technical definition, at the required timing, with full traceability and compliance with applicable FIA requirements and approved/homologated definitions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and maintain the assembly specifications for complete major ICE/ERS assemblies in line with the production, test, and race-use plans.
  • Translate program priorities, engineering releases, component availability, mileage or life constraints, and assembly requirements into an unambiguous build definition for each unit.
  • Ensure that each specification identifies the correct part numbers, revisions, quantities, serialized components, approved alternatives, and configuration effectivity.
  • Coordinate the definition and material readiness for each build specification, including new, used, reworked, or carry-over parts where applicable.
  • Assess the impact of engineering change on active and planned assembly specifications including identifying any affected inventory and impact on plans or timing.
  • Prepare and lead regular configuration and specification reviews, highlighting open decisions, release gaps, maturity risks, and potential impacts to build or test timing.
  • Maintain and communicate the digital thread including authoritative build specification and associated configuration records in the relevant PLM/ERP systems, ensuring consistency between the engineering BOM, assembly BOM, shop orders, and as-built configuration(s).
  • Verify that design changes, deviations, concessions, and temporary solutions are formally approved and correctly incorporated before specification release.
  • Work closely with the Operations team to confirm that the specification is buildable, appropriately sequenced, and compatible with tooling, test-bench, installation, and commissioning constraints.
  • Participate in release readiness, build readiness, reliability, and planning reviews that may affect assembly content or timing.
  • Guarantee the conformity and traceability of operational Power Unit specifications against the applicable FIA dossier, homologated definition, and internal configuration-control requirements.
  • Support investigation and resolution of configuration discrepancies identified during kitting, assembly, inspection, testing, or post-build reconciliation.
  • Issue clear specification status and risk summaries to the Operations and Program teams, with owners and required decision dates for unresolved items.
  • Drive continuous improvement of specification, nomenclature, configuration-control, and cross-functional handover processes, including clear ownership and writing rules.

Skills Experience

  • Experience in configuration management, product definition, assembly specification, BOM management, production engineering, or a comparable role in motorsport, automotive, aerospace, or another highly controlled engineering environment.
  • Working knowledge of PLM and ERP environments, with the discipline to maintain accurate revisions, effectivity, serialization, allocation, and as-built records.
  • Strong knowledge of internal combustion engine and/or hybrid or high-voltage Power Unit architecture, components, interfaces, assembly principles, and technical constraints.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering BOMs, drawings, change notices, technical specifications, concessions, and build or test documentation.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a rigorous, methodical approach. Able to identify inconsistencies and close configuration gaps before they affect assembly or testing.
  • Strong cross-functional communication and meeting facilitation skills, with the confidence to challenge unclear inputs, secure timely decisions, and communicate a single controlled definition.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-moving environment, manage competing priorities, and maintain accuracy under demanding program timing.
