GM Performance Power Units is seeking a hands-on Energy Storage (ES) Battery Test Technician to support the setup, operation, and maintenance of our battery test activities across cells, modules, and packs. You will install units under test, configure instrumentation, and operate advanced test rigs to deliver reliable, high-quality data for our engineering teams. This lab-based role works closely with test engineers and technicians to develop fixtures, resolve test issues in real time, and help keep a fast-paced, high-performance test environment running safely and efficiently.
Key Responsibilities
- Install and configure UUTs (battery packs, modules, and cells) on advanced test beds.
- Set up and calibrate instrumentation including voltage, temperature, pressure, and flow sensors.
- Execute test procedures for high-voltage battery systems, including setup, monitoring, and teardown of test assets.
- Operate and monitor test equipment (cyclers, thermal chambers, DAQ systems) to ensure accurate data collection and safe operation.
- Troubleshoot electrical and mechanical issues in test setups, identifying root cause and implementing corrective actions.
- Support validation and durability testing of battery packs, modules, and associated components under various environmental conditions.
- Analyze and document test data, ensuring results are recorded accurately and communicated to engineering teams.
- Maintain and calibrate test equipment to ensure compliance with safety and quality standards.
- Collaborate with engineers to develop and improve test procedures, fixtures, and methodologies.
- Ensure adherence to high-voltage safety protocols and PPE requirements at all times.
- Assist in building and modifying test rigs, harnesses, and instrumentation for development and validation activities.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to enhance test efficiency, data quality, and lab operations.
Required Qualifications
- Understanding of battery pack, module and cell systems.
- Hands-on experience in test cell operations.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced testing environment.
- Excellent problem-solving and fault-finding capabilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Technical diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related field with 2+ years of experience in battery pack, module and/or cell testing.
- Prior experience in motorsport, automotive, aerospace, or other high-performance testing environments.
- Knowledge of data acquisition systems and test automation tools.
- Skilled in fabrication and prototyping using mill, lathe, press drill, sheet metal, and welding tools.
- Proficient in plumbing tasks including fabrication of coolant systems.
- Familiarity with safe operation with and around High Voltage (HV) systems. HV training certification preferred.
