GM Performance Power Units (GM PPU) is seeking a skilled and motivated Transportation Specialist to join the Warehouse and Logistics Team. This role will develop and optimize the logistics network for the enterprise to support operational goals. This role will oversee and be responsible for coordinating, scheduling, and monitoring the movement of goods across the enterprise.
The role will include account management responsibilities with external transportation providers to ensure on time, cost effectiveness, compliant delivery, and management of KPIs and metrics. This role also handles the coordination of specialized shipments including flatbed, oversized, and international shipments (in partnership with import/exports specialist). This role will handle transportation related inquiries, issues, and service disruptions by troubleshooting problems, coordinating with carriers and internal teams, and providing timely resolutions and communication to all stakeholders. This position requires high attention to detail and a deep understanding of transportation management and transportation service levels in support of a high-performance engineering environment and critical support function for the manufacturing, assembly, and development of our Formula 1 power unit.
Key Responsibilities:
- Engage with warehouses, carriers, and customers to coordinate transportation arrangements.
- Prepare shipping documents and ensure accurate master data (locations, NMFCs, dimensions, freight class).
- Execute routing guides; maintain carrier scorecards and facilitate corrective actions.
- Monitor and resolve exceptions (missed pickups, delays, OS&D, accessorial), escalating when needed.
- Serve as the single point of contact for assigned accounts/stakeholders—proactive status updates, issue management, and service recovery.
- Translate account needs into operational requirements (SOPs, routing guides, labeling, ASN/EDI, scheduling).
- Negotiate spot quotes, expedite options, and accessorial disputes within delegation of authority.
- Lead/participate in Kaizen/CI projects—network design tweaks, packaging optimization, mode shifts, consolidation.
- Ensure DOT/FMCSA, hazmat, C-TPAT, and customer compliance.
- Generate detailed reports to track key performance metrics and provide insights for decision-making.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of warehousing and logistical processes and documentation standards.
Required Qualifications:
- Minimum 4 years of experience in logistics and transportation management, warehouse management, or related role.
- Experience with both domestic and international shipping - strong knowledge of fundamentals (routing guides, freight classes, accessorial, claims).
- Experience in account management, dealing with and managing transportation providers, 3PLs, etc.
- Experience with ERP (Experience with IFS Cloud is a plus).
- Strong proficiency in Excel and data analysis skills.
- Strong attention to detail, documentation discipline, and organizational skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication, ability to work in a team, important for collaborating with various departments and addressing inventory-related issues.
- Understanding of manufacturing and supply chain methodologies, ideally within a high-performance or precision-engineering environment.
- Self-driven with a proactive approach to process development, continuous improvement, and learning.
- Prior experience operating a forklift or the ability to pass a Forklift certification and the ability to safely operate material handling equipment.
Nice to Have Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in supply chain management, logistics, or related field.
- Experience in production and manufacturing setting or within motor sports or high-performance environments.
- Prior involvement in continuous/process improvement (LEAN, Six Sigma, or continuous cost improvement).
- Familiarity with business intelligence / reporting tools (e.g. Power BI, Tableau) for inventory analysis.
- Familiarity with FIA regulations and cost cap reporting.
