GM Performance Power Units in Concord, North Carolina is looking for a Health & Safety Engineering Intern to support our Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) team for summer 2026. This internship is a great opportunity to learn how safety programs work in a real engineering and manufacturing environment. You’ll help keep our workplace safe, learn from experienced safety professionals, and build skills that will benefit your future career.

Date of Internship: Summer 2026

Job Location: On-Site at GM Performance Power Units, 4540 Fortune Drive NW, Concord, NC 28027

Key Responsibilities:
  • Day-to-Day Safety Support
  • Participate in routine safety walkthroughs with the Safety Engineer.
  • Assist with contractor and employee onboarding and verification of safety requirements.
  • Help maintain hazard communication documentation, SDS inventories, and chemical labeling compliance.
  • Assist with PPE management, equipment checks, and safety supply organization.
  • Update safety policies and documentation to meet federal, state, and local rules.
  • Learning about OSHA, EPA, and other safety regulations—and helping us stay compliant.
  • Assisting with waste management and helping prepare environmental permits.
  • Participating in job hazard analyses and helping identify safety equipment needs.
  • Assisting with incident reviews to understand what happened and how to prevent future issues.
  • Taking part in emergency response planning and safety drills.
  • Helping complete safety audits and suggesting improvements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Program Development & Support
    • Assist in creating or revising training materials, toolbox talks, and visual communications.
    • Assist with preparation for safety audits or regulatory inspections.
  • Independent Project
    • Complete an independent health and safety related project during course of internship.
    • Examples may include:
    • Developing a commissioning safety binder.
    • Supporting occupational hygiene sampling or exposure monitoring prep.
    • Creating training or communication materials for summer safety topics.
    • Conducting a small ergonomic assessment and identifying simple improvements.
    Qualifications:
    • Current college/university students seeking degrees in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, Fire Science, Industrial Hygiene, Emergency Maintenance or a related field.
    • Basic knowledge of OSHA, EPA, or other safety regulations.
    • Coursework related to hazardous materials or waste management.
    • Certified Safety Professional certified or seeking certification.
    • Any previous EHS experience from classes, clubs, or part-time jobs.
    • Experience with PowerBI.
    • Incident investigation, data analytics, and root cause analysis.
    Personal Attributes:
    • Good communication and organizational skills.
    • Comfortable using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
    • Interested in workplace safety and environmental health.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects independently.
    Physical Requirements:
    • Ability to stand, walk, and move in diverse operational environments, including race shops, arenas, and commercial facilities.
    • Comfortable working in variable environmental conditions, including loud, high-traffic, or high-pressure environments.
