Company: GM Performance Power Units (GM PPU)

GM Performance Power Units is seeking an upper-level undergraduate intern to support development of Python tools incorporating cell equivalent circuit models (ECMs) and deep learning methods. This role targets upper-level students who bridge mechanical or chemical engineering with data or computer science and want hands-on experience applying deep learning to battery related problems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Help build and maintain simple Python scripts and notebooks for cell data processing and analysis.
  • Use PyTorch to set up, train, and evaluate straightforward neural network models under guidance from senior engineers.
  • Assist with organizing test and simulation datasets and generating clear plots and summaries for the engineering team.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Upper-level student in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, or a similar field.
  • Completed at least one 300/3000 level (or higher) Deep Learning, Machine Learning, or Neural Networks course, with some hands on PyTorch experience.
  • Solid Python skills and interest in batteries, electrochemistry, or energy storage applications.
  • Good communication skills and a collaborative, learning oriented mindset.

Desirable Skills:

  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., GitHub) for version control and collaborative design workflows.
  • Hands-on experience, preferably for two years or more, in Formula SAE, Baja SAE, Formula Student, or a similar competitive student engineering program.

Personal Attributes:

  • Strong, hands-on engineering mindset with a bias toward building, testing, and iterating rather than only modeling on paper.
  • Curiosity and enthusiasm for learning at the intersection of electrochemistry, data science, and software.
  • Able to work independently on well-scoped tasks while asking timely questions when blocked.
  • Comfortable collaborating with multidisciplinary teammates and incorporating feedback into your work.
  • Organized, detail oriented, and committed to clear documentation and high-quality results.
