About the Role

As a Workshop Technician, you’ll work on one of the most diverse and interesting fleets in the region. No two days are the same — and your technical skill will directly support emergency services and essential council operations.

Your day, week, and month could include:

  • Servicing and repairing HGV, LGV and passenger cars, including statutory inspections.
  • Inspecting, servicing and repairs of specialist fleet equipment.
  • Diagnostic investigations across light and heavy fleet & equipment.
  • Mobile maintenance, travelling across the county to keep GCC and GFRS vehicles roadworthy.
  • Working on fire appliances, pumps, boats, and specialist rescue equipment.
  • Servicing portable power units, lighting rigs and hydraulic/pneumatic systems.
  • Training on equipment used across the GCC/GFRS fleet.
  • Supporting equipment readiness for front-line fire appliances.
  • Fabrication, engineering, vehicle conversions, and occasional roadside recovery (full training provided to a national standard).
  • Collection and delivery of vehicles as required.
  • Attending and delivering technical training to the wider team.
  • Attending locations to support our on-call and out-of-hour cover.
  • You will be reporting to the Workshop Supervisor, Workshops Manager & GFRS Control when on-call.

About You

We are seeking a proactive, skilled, and adaptable Workshop Technician who can work effectively on their own initiative and enjoys a varied workload.

Applicants must hold a minimum recognised technical qualification in motor vehicle maintenance or repair and demonstrate a strong commitment to ongoing professional development. Candidates who are LGV-qualified will be expected to train and qualify as an HGV technician, including obtaining a Class 2 HGV driving licence. Similarly, HGV technicians will be expected to train and qualify as an LGV technician. Please note that all role-related training is essential, and applicants are expected to fully commit to completing any additional qualifications required as part of their development within the role. All designated training and specialist equipment training will be provided.

You’ll bring:

  • Strong diagnostic, service and repair experience.
  • Current Recognised qualification within the motor industry or equivalent (City & Guilds / NVQ).
  • The ability to prioritise and manage workloads effectively.
  • Flexibility and a methodical approach.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork.
  • Experience of working within a busy workshop.

You’ll also need to support our 24/365 call-out cover for GFRS, taking part in our standby rota. Standby currently operates one week in every four, with paid standby allowances and opportunities for overtime above your basic pay.
