This is a Gloucester City Council job located in Gloucester. The salary is £25,185 - £25,583 per annum pro rata for 7.5 hours per week on Saturdays. This is a permanent position.

Gloucester City Council is looking for a friendly, reliable and customer-focused Shopmobility Assistant to join our team and help deliver an important service to residents and visitors in Gloucester city centre. The Shopmobility service provides mobility support to customers, helping people to access and enjoy the city centre independently. You will play an important role in ensuring that customers receive a welcoming, professional and safe service.

This is a part-time role working 7.5 hours every Saturday, with opportunities to work additional shifts, including to cover annual leave, sickness absence and other service requirements. Flexibility to undertake additional hours will therefore be advantageous. The role involves substantial weekend working and the successful candidate will be expected to work flexibly in accordance with the needs of the service.

What you’ll be doing

  • Provide a high standard of customer service, creating a welcoming and comfortable environment for all customers.
  • Take bookings and assess, train and assist customers in the safe operation of mobility scooters and other equipment.
  • Ensure mobility equipment is maintained in a satisfactory and safe condition and take appropriate action in the event of a breakdown.
  • Open and close the Shopmobility premises and assist with building security.
  • Assist with the day-to-day running of the service, including handling donations and saleable goods where required.
  • Identify customers who may require additional support and appropriately signpost vulnerable customers to other services.
  • Work positively with colleagues, managers and internal and external stakeholders.
  • Help identify opportunities to improve the service and ensure customers receive the best possible experience.
  • Work flexibly and positively, demonstrating a ‘can-do’ attitude and taking responsibility for getting things done.
  • Undertake other reasonable duties consistent with the level of the role.

About you

  • Friendly, approachable and committed to providing excellent customer service.
  • Confident communicating with a wide range of people.
  • Able to remain calm and effective when working under pressure.
  • Able to work independently while also being an effective member of a team.
  • Numerate and comfortable dealing with bookings, transactions and other routine administrative tasks.
  • Interested in learning about mobility equipment and developing their product knowledge.
  • Aware of the importance of health and safety.
  • Flexible and willing to work additional hours when required, including covering sickness and annual leave.
  • Previous experience of working within a mobility, access or customer service environment would be advantageous, as would technical knowledge of mobility scooters. However, we are particularly interested in candidates who demonstrate the right attitude, commitment and willingness to learn.

Additional Information

The council is not currently able to offer sponsorship in this role. Candidates will need to have right to work that enables them to commit to at least 6 months employment. Right to work is not transferable from a sponsored role held with another employer.
