Biomedical Scientist - Section Lead, Band 7

We are looking for an experienced HCPC Registered Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly team
You will be responsible for leading a section of the Cellular Pathology laboratory and ensuring the effective and efficient provision of the service on a daily basis. You will be organising the staffing and ensuring the best use of resources to support the department to meet turnaround time requirements
Main duties of the job
You will have HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist and have experience of working in a busy Histology Department.
You will be the section lead for the main laboratory, ensuring an efficient flow through embedding, sectioning and staining, and digital scanning. You will be responsible for the daily QC checks on the work and the appropriate deployment of staff and resources within the main lab area to ensure that the department is operating efficiently and providing a timely service
You will be ensuring that the Department meets cancer targets and you will need to have experience of working in Cellular Pathology and leading a team

The Histology Department is based within the Pathology Department at Cheltenham General Hospital and is one of the biggest within the South West, receiving in the region of 45,000 requests per year.
We have a team of medical staff, scientists and support staff working in a busy environment and are focused on providing a high quality efficient service.
Job responsibilities
- Lead the main laboratory section of the laboratory involving overseeing the embedding, microtomy , special stains and digital sections.
- Be responsible for the final step of quality checking prior to clinical reporting
- Provide specialist advice to users of the departments services.
- Prioritise and manage staff and resources for day-to-day clinical needs
- Provide support and leadership in day-to-day problem solving and enquiries from medical laboratory assistants, biomedical scientists, clerical and clinical staff on technical and clinical matters.
- Provide active support for the maintenance of UKAS accreditation.
- Be actively involved in the writing and review of the standard operating procedures, training schedules and safety protocols of the department in line with the quality management programme.
