About the Opportunity

Our client, a leading organisation within the infrastructure and energy sector, is seeking an experienced Senior Project Manager to lead the successful delivery of major high-voltage substation projects.

This is an exciting opportunity to take ownership of complex infrastructure projects from inception through to commissioning, ensuring delivery is achieved safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. The successful candidate will work closely with clients, contractors, engineering teams, and senior stakeholders while managing multidisciplinary project teams across the project lifecycle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, execution, and delivery of high-voltage substation projects.
  • Ensure projects are completed safely, on time, within budget, and in accordance with technical specifications.
  • Develop and manage project schedules, budgets, resource plans, and risk management strategies.
  • Act as the primary point of contact for clients, contractors, consultants, and internal stakeholders.
  • Lead and motivate multidisciplinary project teams, driving collaboration and performance.
  • Manage project resources to optimise efficiency and successful project outcomes.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate project risks while implementing appropriate corrective actions.
  • Ensure compliance with quality, health and safety, environmental, regulatory, and client requirements.
  • Monitor and manage financial performance, including budgeting, forecasting, cost control, and reporting.
  • Oversee project delivery from design and procurement through construction, testing, energisation, and commissioning.
  • Provide regular project updates, progress reports, and performance reviews to senior management and stakeholders.

Minimum Requirements

Essential

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Civil, Mechanical Engineering, Project Management, or a related discipline.
  • Proven experience delivering high-voltage substation projects, ideally at 132kV and above, from design through to commissioning.
  • Strong technical understanding of substation infrastructure, including:
    • Transformers
    • Switchgear
    • Protection Systems
    • Control Panels
    • Earthing Systems
  • Demonstrated experience managing complex engineering and infrastructure projects.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects while maintaining safety, quality, commercial, and programme requirements.
  • Proficiency in project management and engineering software, including:
    • Microsoft Project
    • Primavera P6
    • AutoCAD
    • Document Control Systems
  • Strong understanding of UK transmission and utility standards, including:
    • National Grid requirements
    • DNO and TSO specifications
    • CDM Regulations
    • IEC Standards
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings, project programmes, risk registers, and financial reports.

Desirable

  • Project Management qualifications such as PRINCE2, PMP, or APM.
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or progression towards professional accreditation.
  • Experience working on transmission network reinforcement and grid connection projects.
  • Previous responsibility for managing multidiscipline EPC or turnkey infrastructure projects.
