The Lead Data Modernization Architect is the primary orchestrator of our enterprise data transformation journey. This is a high-visibility, single point of accountability leadership role focused on transitioning a legacy Teradata ecosystem to a modern, cloud-native architecture. The successful candidate will own the end-to-end technical vision—from initial discovery and architectural design to the final decommissioning of legacy on-premise hardware. Operating within a $10M+ transformation budget, you will ensure that the migration strategy is technically superior, resilient, and fully aligned with global banking standards for risk, compliance, and continuity. You will act as the vital bridge between technical execution and executive stakeholders, translating complex roadmaps into long-term business value.

Requirements

  • Experience leading large-scale data platform modernization programmes, specifically focused on Cloud data migrations.
  • Deep, expert-level understanding of Teradata architecture (AMPs, Parsing Engines, Nodes) and the complexities of migrating legacy MPP workloads.
  • Proven hands-on experience designing cloud-native platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure), with mastery of services such as Redshift, BigQuery, EMR, Glue, and Lambda.
  • Proficiency in Spark (PySpark), Python, and modern DataOps frameworks (Airflow, dbt) to build robust ELT/ETL pipelines.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the Global Banking regulatory landscape, audit readiness, and the implementation of data governance frameworks (DAMA/DMBOK).
  • Expertise in Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform/CloudFormation) and deploying containerized solutions via CI/CD pipelines (Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Strong business acumen with the ability to link technical solutions to strategic value, supported by a track record of managing multi-million pound transformation budgets.

Job responsibilities

  • Define the data architecture vision and execute a multi-year phased migration wave plan that accounts for global dependencies and regulatory lock-out periods.
  • Design and implement scalable cloud data warehouses and enterprise data lakes (AWS/GCP), replacing legacy Teradata structures with modern, high-performance alternatives.
  • Identify and deploy automated migration accelerators (e.g., AWS SCT, code conversion engines) to modernize legacy BTEQ/TPT scripts and ETL pipelines.
  • Ensure all solutions adhere to global banking standards, including SOX, GDPR, and BCBS 239, while maintaining ownership of Disaster Recovery and High Availability designs.
  • Interface with C-level executives to communicate data-driven insights, foster trust, and provide subject matter expertise for strategic proposals and RFPs.
  • Define squad structures and lead a high-performing team of engineers, identifying resource gaps and providing the necessary upskilling to operate the new cloud platform.
